Description
Domaine Le Pas de l’Escalette Ze Roze 2023
Far removed from the simple poolside sippers often associated with the category, this wine offers a serious pedigree while maintaining an undeniably fun and vibrant spirit. The 2023 Ze Roze is a precise blend of 50% Grenache, 40% Cinsault, and 10% Carignan, grapes that are perfectly adapted to the rugged landscape of the Languedoc. This rosé is not merely a byproduct of red wine production but is intentionally crafted to express the unique identity of its high-altitude origins.
The fruit is sourced from the distinct terroir of the Terrasses du Larzac, specifically from vineyards nestled at an altitude of approximately 350 meters. Here, the vines struggle in deep, draining soils composed of limestone scree, locally known as "clapas." The 2023 vintage was characterized by warm and dry conditions, which concentrated the fruit flavors, yet the significant elevation provided cool nights that were critical for preserving natural acidity. This diurnal shift ensures the wine retains a razor-sharp freshness despite the solar intensity of the growing season.
In the glass, the wine presents a brilliant, delicate salmon-pink hue that glows with clarity. The nose is an expressive riot of summer, offering immediate and lifted aromas of wild strawberry, pink grapefruit zest, and white peach. As it opens, more complex secondary notes emerge, including delicate rose petals and the savory, herbal scent of wild garrigue that is a hallmark of the region. On the palate, this wine is dry and medium-bodied, defined by a zinging acidity that provides a mouthwatering structure. Flavors of blood orange, tart raspberry, and redcurrant mingle with a distinct stony minerality, leading to a finish that is long, elegant, and persistently refreshing.
Domaine Le Pas de l’Escalette is a benchmark for conscientious farming in the region, holding both certified organic and biodynamic (Biodyvin) credentials. Owners Julien Zernott and Delphine Rousseau treat this rosé with the same respect as their top whites, vinifying it gently in stainless steel tanks. The grapes are pressed directly—rather than using the saignée method—and fermentation occurs at cool temperatures without malolactic fermentation, a choice made to lock in the wine's zesty, crisp character and crystalline purity.
This wine’s structural integrity and acidity make it a versatile partner for food. It pairs beautifully with spicy shrimp tacos topped with a lime and avocado crema, where the wine's acidity cuts through the richness of the avocado while handling the heat of the spice. It is equally at home alongside a grilled salmon burger with arugula and caper aioli, or a classic American Cobb salad. La Revue du Vin de France rated this vintage 90/100, a significant accolade that highlights its exceptional quality-to-price ratio in the world of premium rosé.
