Description
Tablas Creek, Esprit de Tablas Rouge, Paso Robles 2020
The 2020 Esprit de Tablas Rouge represents the pinnacle of the estate's production, modeled after the great wines of Châteauneuf-du-Pape. This vintage is a complex blend of 40% Mourvèdre, 30% Grenache, 21% Syrah, 5% Counoise, 3% Vaccarèse, and 1% Cinsaut. The fruit is sourced exclusively from the winery's certified organic and biodynamic estate vineyard in the Adelaida District AVA of Paso Robles, characterized by its calcareous clay soils and high elevation. The 2020 growing season began with a cool spring, but extreme heat waves in August and September accelerated ripening, resulting in a harvest that combined the intensity of a warm vintage with the structural integrity of the estate's limestone terroir.
In the glass, the wine exhibits a deep, opaque ruby hue with a violet rim, indicating its concentration. The nose is evocative and unmistakably Mourvèdre-driven, offering aromas of elderberry, blackcurrant, and roasted meats, layered with savory notes of forest floor, wild fennel, and a hint of graphite. On the palate, this is a full-bodied and dry wine that balances power with elegance. It delivers rich flavors of black cherry, plum skin, and licorice, underpinned by a stony minerality and a touch of new leather. The texture is velvety yet structured, with firm, ripe tannins that suggest significant aging potential. The finish is long and resonant, leaving lingering impressions of savory spice and bramble.
Tablas Creek is a global leader in sustainable farming, having achieved the world's first Regenerative Organic Certified™ status for a winery. Their philosophy extends to the cellar, where winemaking relies on native yeasts and minimal intervention. The varietals were fermented separately in stainless steel and wooden uprights before being blended and aged in 1200-gallon neutral oak foudres. This traditional aging vessel allows the wine to breathe and integrate without imparting aggressive oak flavors, preserving the purity of the fruit and the signature of the soil.
Highly acclaimed by critics, this vintage secured 96 points from both Wine Enthusiast and Decanter, as well as 94 points from Vinous, offering remarkable value relative to its peers in the Rhône and California. Its savory depth makes it a superb match for hearty American cuisine. Pair this wine with slow-braised beef short ribs, as the acidity and tannins will cut through the richness of the meat. Alternatively, serve it alongside a grilled leg of lamb with a rosemary and garlic rub to accentuate the wine's herbal, gamey complexity.
