Description
Finca La Mata, Ribera del Duero Red 2021
This commanding Spanish red is a pure expression of 100% Tinta del PaĆs, the local synonym for Tempranillo in the Ribera del Duero region. It is crafted by the acclaimed winemaker Isaac FernĆ”ndez using fruit sourced exclusively from ancient bush vines ranging between 60 and 85 years of age. These gnarly, low-yielding vines are located in the Burgos province, producing small, concentrated berries that translate into a wine of immense depth and structural integrity.
The 2021 vintage in Ribera del Duero was characterized by the historic "Filomena" snowstorm during the winter, which replenished deep soil water reserves. A balanced growing season followed, marked by the region's signature diurnal temperature shiftsāhot days and cool nightsāwhich allowed for slow, even ripening. Grown at a high elevation of approximately 900 meters on soils of sandy clay and pebbles, the grapes developed thick skins and complex aromatics while retaining the fresh acidity essential for balance.
In the glass, the wine pours a deep, opaque ruby color with a vibrant violet rim. The nose offers a complex bouquet of black cherry, crĆØme de cassis, and pomegranate, layered with savory notes of graphite, wild scrubland herbs, licorice, and a hint of cigar ash. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, dry wine with a dense core of black currant and dark chocolate flavors. The texture is framed by firm, chewy tannins and a zesty acidity that provides lift, leading to a long, mineral-driven finish.
Winemaking at Finca La Mata follows a philosophy of minimal intervention to highlight the terroir. The vineyards are farmed using organic practices, and fermentation is spontaneous, utilizing only native yeasts found on the grape skins. The wine is matured for approximately 10 months in a combination of 90% French and 10% American oak barrels. This regimen imparts subtle structural polish and spice without overwhelming the vibrant old-vine fruit character.
This robust red is an ideal match for hearty American cuisine. It pairs beautifully with a grilled ribeye steak or a classic bacon cheeseburger, where the wine's substantial tannins cut through the fat and char of the meat. For a slow-cooked option, try it with braised short ribs; the wine's acidity will balance the richness of the sauce. Garnering a score of 91 points from Wine Spectator, this bottle represents exceptional value, offering the complexity often found in much more expensive wines from the region.
