Description
Calyptra Inedito 2016
This distinct vintage of Calyptra's icon wine represents a unique departure from the norm, composed of a blend of 60% Syrah, 25% Merlot, and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. Sourced exclusively from the winery's "Santa Cruz de Coya" estate in the Alto Cachapoal Valley, the fruit is grown on alluvial and colluvial terraces at an altitude of approximately 1,000 meters (3,280 feet) above sea level. This specific assemblage was crafted to reflect the singular conditions of the year, showcasing the adaptability of the winemaker to the high-altitude terroir.
The 2016 vintage in Chile was defined by the El Niño phenomenon, which brought cooler temperatures and higher rainfall than average to the region. While many producers struggled, Calyptra utilized these conditions to produce a wine of exceptional elegance and vibrancy rather than sheer power. The cooler growing season allowed for a slow ripening process, preserving high natural acidity and developing complex aromatic profiles without excessive alcohol. The result is a "mountain wine" that speaks clearly of its Andean origins, characterized by freshness and tension rather than the broad, jammy profiles often associated with warmer years.
In the glass, the wine displays a deep, intense ruby hue with bright violet highlights at the rim, indicative of its freshness and acidity. The nose is complex and expressive, immediately offering a bouquet of fresh red fruits such as wild raspberries, tart cherries, and plums, interwoven with distinctive herbal notes of sage and thyme. As it opens, layers of graphite, crushed violets, and a subtle hint of tobacco leaf emerge, adding savory depth. On the palate, this is a medium-to-full-bodied wine that defies the heaviness of typical New World blends. It is dry, with a core of juicy red fruit supported by a spine of electric, vibrant acidity. The tannins are fine-grained and chalky—"delicate" as described by critics—providing structure without aggression. The finish is long and persistent, leaving a lingering impression of mineral dust and fresh berries.
Winemaking at Calyptra is a patient art, overseen by the Zarhi family and winemaker Emiliano DomÃnguez. The grapes were hand-harvested from low-yielding vines managed with sustainable and organic practices, emphasizing minimal intervention to protect the ecosystem. For this vintage, the wine underwent an extended aging period of 26 months in French oak barrels, followed by an additional 18 months of bottle aging before release. This rigorous regimen ensures the integration of oak, which serves to frame the fruit rather than mask it, resulting in a polished and sophisticated texture.
Given its high acidity and herbal undertones, this wine is exceptionally food-friendly. It pairs beautifully with a grilled rack of lamb served with a mint and rosemary chimichurri, where the wine's herbal notes echo the seasoning and the acidity cuts through the fat. Alternatively, try it with a seared venison loin with a berry reduction to complement the wine's red fruit profile. For a classic American pairing, a charcoal-grilled ribeye steak with a simple salt and pepper crust allows the wine's structure to shine without being overwhelmed.
The 2016 Inedito has garnered praise for its elegance in a challenging year, with critics like Patricio Tapia of Descorchados highlighting it as the "most delicate and subtle" version of this label to date. It is a sophisticated choice for collectors who appreciate the nuance of cool-climate vintages, offering a premium experience that rivals more expensive Bordeaux blends or high-altitude Syrahs.
