Description
Sadie Family Wines 'T Voetpad '24
This wine is a historic, co-fermented field blend sourced from the oldest known vineyard of its kind in South Africa. The composition includes Semillon Blanc, Semillon Gris, Palomino, Chenin Blanc, and Muscat of Alexandria. These varieties are interplanted and harvested together from vines established between 1887 and 1928, creating a seamless integration of varietal character that transcends specific percentages. The vineyard is located on the remote northwestern slopes of the Piquetberg Mountains in the Swartland.
The 2024 vintage was defined by a hot, dry growing season and a compressed harvest, presenting significant challenges across the region. However, this specific site experienced a miraculous reprieve: a recorded 70% reduction in the region's typical punishing winds, which allowed the vines to retain vital freshness despite the drought conditions. The terroir is equally distinct, featuring weathered sandstone soils and a critical subterranean water source—an "underground river"—that sustains these dry-farmed bush vines without irrigation.
In the glass, the wine displays a pristine, pale straw hue with excellent clarity. The nose is arrestingly complex and expressive, offering primary aromas of waxy lanolin, lime cordial, and yellow plum, layered with secondary nuances of dried straw, crushed gravel, and faint orange blossom. On the palate, this is a medium-bodied, dry white wine defined by a tension-filled texture. It possesses a grippy, phenolic mouthfeel often described as "white tannins," balanced by a core of racy acidity. Flavors of salted melon, spice box, and a touch of Japanese daikon evolve into a savory, enduring finish that speaks to its immense aging potential.
Winemaker Eben Sadie employs a philosophy of extreme minimalism to let this heritage site speak clearly. The farming is strictly sustainable, avoiding herbicides and relying on manual labor. In the cellar, the grapes undergo whole-bunch pressing before spontaneous fermentation with native yeasts in old oak foudres. The wine is aged on the lees for approximately 12 months to build texture and is bottled unfined and unfiltered, preserving its raw, energetic integrity.
For food pairings, this wine requires dishes that can match its waxy texture and saline minerality. It pairs beautifully with pan-seared scallops finished in a brown butter and sage sauce; the wine's acidity cuts through the fat while the lanolin notes echo the sweetness of the shellfish. A roasted pork loin with caramelized fennel and apples offers another superb match, as the wine's herbal undertones complement the savory-sweet profile of the roast. For a distinctly American option, try grilled swordfish with a lemon-caper butter, where the wine's grippy structure stands up to the meaty fish.
While the 2024 vintage is just entering the market, it has already garnered acclaim, with Neal Martin awarding it 94 points, noting its "cerebral" nature and "linear" finish. Historically, 'T Voetpad is a critical heavyweight, with the 2017 vintage earning a near-perfect 99 points from Tim Atkin MW. Given the minuscule production of roughly 2,400 bottles, it remains a highly allocated collectible that offers profound value relative to its world-class quality and historical significance.
