Description
Oremus Tokaji Cuvée Late Harvest 2021
This exquisite dessert wine represents the modern face of Hungary's legendary Tokaj region, crafted by the meticulous team behind Vega Sicilia. The 2021 vintage is a masterfully constructed blend primarily driven by Furmint, which provides the structural backbone and acidity, supported by Zéta and Sárgamuskotály (Yellow Muscat) for aromatic intensity and lush fruitiness. The 2021 growing season in Tokaj was defined by a cool, rainy spring followed by a warm summer and a crucially dry September, which preserved vibrant acidity in the grapes. An October filled with morning mists and sunny afternoons encouraged the development of Botrytis cinerea (noble rot) on the berries, concentrating sugars while maintaining the region’s signature electric freshness.
In the glass, the wine reveals a brilliant, shimmering golden hue with medium viscosity that clings elegantly to the sides. The nose is an expressive and complex bouquet, bursting with aromas of honeyed apricots, fresh quince, and mandarin orange, layered with delicate floral notes of acacia and lime blossom. Hints of ginger root and beeswax provide a savory counterpoint to the fruit. On the palate, this is a medium-bodied and decidedly sweet wine, yet it remains remarkably light on its feet thanks to the vintage's racy acidity. The flavor profile delivers luscious waves of peach nectar, candied lemon peel, and Turkish delight, finishing with a clean, mineral-driven snap that prevents any sensation of cloying heaviness. The texture is silky and polished, leading to a long, zesty finish that echoes with notes of spice and citrus.
The winemaking philosophy at Oremus for this Late Harvest cuvée emphasizes purity of fruit and freshness over heavy oxidation. Clusters are hand-harvested, selected only when they contain at least 50% botrytis-affected berries, ensuring a perfect balance of healthy, overripe fruit and noble rot character. Following a gentle pressing and slow fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve primary aromas, the wine is aged for a brief period of approximately two to six months in Hungarian oak barrels (typically 136-liter Gönc or 220-liter Szerednye barrels). This short wood contact adds a whisper of vanilla and structure without masking the vibrant varietal characteristics.
While traditional with foie gras, the wine's acidity and sweetness make it a brilliant companion for bold American flavors. It pairs exceptionally well with a spicy Nashville hot chicken sandwich; the sugar in the wine extinguishes the chili heat while the acidity cuts through the fried richness. For a dessert pairing, try it with a warm peach cobbler topped with vanilla bean ice cream, where the wine’s stone fruit notes mirror the dish and its acidity cleanses the palate of the buttery crust. Alternatively, a blue cheese burger with caramelized onions offers a savory-sweet contrast, as the wine's honeyed profile complements the salty pungency of the cheese. Garnering praise with scores such as 93 points from Wine Enthusiast and 92 points from Wine Spectator, this bottling offers a luxurious introduction to Tokaj’s sweet wines at a fraction of the price of an Aszú, making it an accessible indulgence for any occasion.
