Description
Miguel Torres, Andica, Carmenere (MWO) 2022
This wine is a pure expression of its varietal, composed of 100% Carmenere grapes sourced from the Maule Valley in Chile's Central Valley. As part of the Andica line, it represents a specific homage to the biodiversity of the Chilean landscape and is produced using 100% certified organic grapes ("Made With Organic"), ensuring the fruit retains its natural vitality and terroir-driven character.
The 2022 vintage in the Maule Valley was defined by a continuation of the "mega drought," resulting in a warm growing season with low yields. These conditions, combined with a mild spring and careful water management, produced uneven ripening that required meticulous selection during harvest. The resulting wine is notably concentrated, benefiting from the lower yields to offer a density and richness that balances the varietal's natural herbal tendencies with ripe fruit intensity.
In the glass, the wine presents a deep, dark cherry red hue with excellent clarity. The nose is quintessential Carmenere, offering intense aromas of ripe blackberries and dark plums, layered with distinct balsamic notes, eucalyptus, and a touch of black pepper. On the palate, it is medium-to-full-bodied and dry, defined by a velvety texture and soft, rounded tannins. Flavors of black fruit compote mingle with savory undertones of leather, dried herbs, and a hint of mandarin zest. The finish is long and juicy, supported by a pleasant toasted oak character that adds complexity without overpowering the fruit.
Miguel Torres is a pioneer in sustainable viticulture, and this wine reflects that philosophy through rigorous organic farming practices that exclude synthetic chemicals and herbicides. In the winery, the grapes underwent fermentation in stainless steel to preserve freshness, followed by malolactic fermentation. Approximately 50% of the wine was aged for six months in third-use or older French oak barrels, a technique chosen to soften the texture and impart subtle spicy notes while maintaining the purity of the fruit profile.
This Carmenere pairs exceptionally well with American barbecue dishes, such as smoked beef brisket with a spicy dry rub, where the wine's peppery notes echo the seasoning. It is also a perfect match for a grilled skirt steak served with chimichurri sauce, as the herbal elements in the wine bridge beautifully with the parsley and oregano in the sauce. For a vegetarian option, try it with roasted portobello mushrooms topped with melted provolone.
Critics and consumers alike have praised this vintage for its consistency and value, with the wine holding a solid 4.0 rating on community platforms like Vivino and earning a Silver Medal at the Sommeliers Choice Awards. It is widely regarded as an affordable yet sophisticated example of Chilean Carmenere, offering the structure of a more expensive bottle at an accessible price point.
