Description
Marc Kreydenweiss Rhone Coteaux du Pont du Gard Rouge "Grimaudes" 2021
This vibrant red wine is a biodynamically farmed blend comprising 60% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and 20% Mourvèdre. The 2021 vintage in the Southern Rhône was defined by a cooler growing season and significant spring frosts, which naturally curbed yields and resulted in a wine of exceptional freshness and lower alcohol compared to the region's typically solar profile. The fruit is sourced from the "Les Grimaudes" vineyard within the Coteaux du Pont du Gard IGP, a terroir distinguished by its iron-rich soils scattered with "gress" (rolled pebbles), silica, limestone, and sandstone. These specific soil conditions impart a distinct ferrous minerality and structural elegance to the final blend, differentiating it from the heavier, more clay-dominant wines of the broader area.
In the glass, the wine displays a brilliant, translucent ruby hue with garnet highlights, indicative of its gentle extraction. The nose is immediately expressive and lifted, offering a bouquet of tart red berries including cranberries and redcurrants, interwoven with darker tones of blueberry and fresh plum. As it breathes, complex secondary aromas of crushed violets, garrigue (wild thyme and rosemary), and a subtle, bloody iron note emerge, grounding the bright fruit. On the palate, this is a medium-bodied, dry wine defined by its energetic acidity and fine-grained, silky tannins. The flavor profile mirrors the nose with crunchy red cherry and pomegranate notes, layered with licorice root and a savory, stony finish. The texture is supple yet precise, avoiding any heaviness, and the finish is persistent with a refreshing saline snap.
The Kreydenweiss family is a pioneer in biodynamic viticulture, having practiced these methods since 1999 with certification from Biodyvin. Now managed by Jean Kreydenweiss, the estate emphasizes a philosophy of "living soil" to maximize terroir expression. For the "Grimaudes," the winemaking is decidedly low-intervention. Grapes are hand-harvested and undergo a short maceration with spontaneous fermentation using indigenous yeasts. To preserve the purity of the fruit and the tension of the vintage, the wine is aged for 12 months in concrete tanks rather than oak, ensuring the delicate floral and mineral nuances remain unmasked by wood flavors.
Given its high acidity and herbal undertones, this wine is an incredibly versatile partner for the table. It would pair exceptionally well with grilled lamb chops finished with a rosemary-garlic rub, as the wine's garrigue notes would echo the herbs while the tannins cut through the fat. Alternatively, try it with a Carolina-style pulled pork sandwich; the wine's bright acidity and red fruit character will complement the vinegar-based sauce and rich meat perfectly. For a vegetarian option, a rustic wild mushroom and gruyère burger would highlight the wine's earthy, savory qualities.
While mainstream critics like the Wine Advocate or Wine Spectator have not published specific scores for the 2021 vintage, the "Grimaudes" bottling is widely recognized among enthusiasts and sommeliers as a high-value "insider" wine. It consistently offers the complexity of a Châteauneuf-du-Pape at a fraction of the price, particularly in vintages like 2021 that favor elegance over power.
