Description
Domaine du Tunnel, Cornas 2020
This commanding Northern Rhône red is a pure expression of 100% Syrah, sourced from a mosaic of distinct parcels across the Cornas appellation, including the notable lieux-dits of Champelrose and Les Eygas. The fruit is drawn from mature vines, some of which are up to 90 years old, rooting deeply into the region's signature decomposed granite soils on precipitous, terraced slopes. The 2020 vintage was defined by warm, solar conditions that encouraged early ripening, resulting in fruit of exceptional concentration and depth while retaining vital freshness. This specific terroir, combined with the generous growing season, yields a wine that perfectly balances the rugged, granitic intensity of Cornas with a polished, ripe fruit profile.
In the glass, the wine presents an opaque, inky ruby-purple hue that suggests great density. The nose is highly evocative and complex, offering a profound bouquet of crème de cassis, ripe blackberries, and black cherries, intricately layered with savory nuances of smoked meat, graphite, camphor, and a floral lift of crushed violets. On the palate, this is a full-bodied and completely dry wine, showcasing a dense core of black fruit preserves and licorice. The texture is velvety yet structured, supported by firm, fine-grained tannins and a spine of energetic acidity that drives a long, persistent finish marked by white pepper and stony minerality.
Winemaker Stéphane Robert operates the estate with a philosophy centered on sustainable farming, which necessitates arduous manual labor on the steep hillsides where mechanization is impossible. The domaine derives its name from its unique aging cellar, housed within a former steam train tunnel that provides natural temperature regulation. For the 2020 vintage, the fruit was 100% destemmed to emphasize purity and elegance over rusticity. Fermentation was carried out using native yeasts, followed by aging for approximately 14 months in oak barrels, with a very low percentage of new wood to ensure the granite terroir and fruit profile remain the primary focus.
This powerful Syrah pairs exceptionally well with robust American-leaning cuisine. It is an ideal match for a charcoal-grilled ribeye steak with a heavy peppercorn crust, as the wine's inherent peppery notes and tannins harmonize beautifully with the char and rendered fat. Alternatively, pair it with slow-smoked Texas beef brisket; the wine’s smoky, savory elements and acidity will cut through the richness of the meat while complementing the smoke ring flavor. Critics have praised this release highly, with Jeb Dunnuck awarding it 96 points and Wine Spectator giving it 94 points. Considering its high scores and the prestige of the appellation, it offers remarkable value compared to its peers in Hermitage or Côte-Rôtie.
