Description
Lievland Vineyards, Chenin Blanc – 2023
This exceptional white wine is a pure expression of 100% Chenin Blanc, crafted from Certified Heritage Vineyards in the Agter-Paarl region of South Africa. The fruit is sourced exclusively from dry-farmed, old bush vines planted in 1977, 1983, and 1987. These gnarled "wise elders" of the vineyard produce low yields of concentrated fruit, offering a depth and complexity that only decades of struggle in the soil can provide.
The 2023 vintage was characterized by an early harvest, allowing the winemaking team to pick the grapes at optimal ripeness before the onset of seasonal rains. This timing ensured a crop of pristine health and vibrant aromatics. The vines are rooted in decomposed shale soils, with the vineyard blocks divided between cool, south-facing slopes that contribute flinty tension and warmer pockets that encourage rich, textured fruit development. This duality of terroir creates a wine that balances structural integrity with generous flavor.
In the glass, the wine presents a brilliant light straw color with shimmering golden highlights. The nose is an expressive fruit-forward bouquet, bursting with aromas of white peach, zesty lemon curd, and tropical pineapple, layered with delicate notes of apricot and a whisper of honeysuckle perfume. On the palate, this medium-bodied wine is elegantly dry, delivering a harmonious interplay between a rich, mouth-filling texture and a spine of zesty, vibrant acidity. The flavor profile echoes the nose with intense stone fruit and citrus, leading to a long, clean finish marked by a compelling stony minerality.
Lievland's winemaking philosophy emphasizes a "refreshingly restrained" approach to showcase the fruit's natural character. The majority of the juice is fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve freshness, while a small portion (approximately 15%) is fermented in neutral oak barrels. Following fermentation, the wine spends extended time on the lees (spent yeast cells), a technique that builds the wine's signature creamy texture without masking its vibrant fruit with excessive oak flavors.
This Chenin Blanc is incredibly versatile at the dinner table. It pairs beautifully with seared scallops topped with a pineapple beurre blanc, where the wine's tropical notes mirror the sauce while its acidity cuts through the richness of the butter. For a classic American holiday pairing, serve this with a roast turkey glazed with citrus and herbs; the wine has the weight to stand up to the savory meat and the brightness to cleanse the palate. Alternatively, try it with a pork tenderloin served with a warm apple compote, as the stone fruit flavors in the wine will complement the sweetness of the apples perfectly.
The quality of this bottling has been widely recognized by critics. It received a stellar 95-point rating and 5 stars from the 2025 Platter's South African Wine Guide, as well as 90 points from Master of Wine Tim Atkin. These accolades highlight its status as a wine of serious pedigree that remains remarkably affordable, offering a "Loveland" spirit that overdelivers in every glass.
