Description
Quivira Vineyards, Dry Creek Valley Fig Tree Sauvignon Blanc 2022
This wine presents a sophisticated composition, blending 96% Sauvignon Blanc with 4% Sémillon to add textural depth. The Sauvignon Blanc component is a thoughtful marriage of two distinct clones: the structural Mondavi Clone 1 and the highly aromatic Sauvignon Blanc Musqué. Sourced exclusively from the estate’s Fig Tree Vineyard, the site sits at the unique confluence of Wine Creek and Dry Creek, where alluvial, rocky soils impart a distinct mineral freshness to the vines. The 110-year-old fig tree standing among the rows serves as a sentinel for this singular terroir.
The 2022 vintage began with an ideal growing season that was punctuated by a dramatic late-August heatwave. Fortunately, phased picking allowed the majority of the fruit to be harvested at optimal freshness before the temperature spike, while a rigorous selection process involved dropping sunburned fruit. This resulted in yields 30-50% below normal, delivering a crop of exceptional concentration and intensity. The resulting wine captures the resilience of the vintage, balancing the heat’s richness with the cool microclimate’s natural acidity.
In the glass, the wine displays a star-bright, pale straw hue with vibrant flashes of green. The nose is complex and explosive, layering primary notes of Meyer lemon, grapefruit, and underripe pear with exotic hints of mango and peach. Secondary aromas add intrigue, offering nuances of dried honeysuckle, hibiscus, and a distinctive note of toasted coconut and almond macaroon derived from the Acacia wood aging. On the palate, this medium-bodied, dry white is defined by "eyebrow-raising acidity" that provides a racy, electric structure. Flavors of tart clementine, kumquat, and lemon bar zip across the tongue, grounded by a sleek river-rock minerality that extends into a long, refreshing finish.
Quivira is a leader in holistic farming, and this wine is produced from CCOF-certified organic grapes. The winemaking approach is designed to build texture while preserving purity; the fruit underwent 100% whole-cluster pressing followed by fermentation in a mix of vessels. The blend was aged in stainless steel (to retain crispness), neutral French oak, and 500L Acacia wood barrels. The Acacia wood is a signature touch, imparting soft floral aromatics and a rounded mouthfeel without the aggressive spice of new oak.
This wine’s high acidity and textural weight make it a versatile partner for American coastal cuisine. It pairs exceptionally well with pan-seared scallops served over a sweet corn and bacon succotash, as the wine's acidity cuts through the richness of the shellfish and pork. Alternatively, try it with a warm goat cheese salad featuring California Humboldt Fog, fresh figs, and a citrus vinaigrette to echo the wine’s own fruit and herbal profiles.
This bottling has garnered significant critical acclaim, most notably achieving a stellar 94 points from Wine Spectator, which praised its "complex and aromatic" profile with notes of "lanolin and honeycomb." Such a high score is rare for domestic Sauvignon Blanc, making this wine an extraordinary value relative to its peer group and a definitive example of serious, age-worthy California white wine.
