Description
Landes, Le Big Boss Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
This distinct cuvée is a rare 100% Cabernet Sauvignon sourced from the Right Bank of Bordeaux, specifically the Lussac-Saint-Émilion appellation. The fruit is harvested from a single one-hectare plot of old vines, ranging from 50 to 60 years of age, which naturally limits yields and enhances concentration. The 2022 vintage in Bordeaux was defined by a hot, dry growing season, resulting in grapes with exceptional ripeness and thick skins, though the deep clay-limestone soils of the estate helped retain essential moisture and freshness in the vines.
In the glass, the wine displays a beautiful, sustained deep purple color with high viscosity. The nose is vibrant and fruit-forward, dominated by intense aromas of ripe blackcurrant, wild raspberry, and crushed blackberries, accented by subtle notes of baking spices and a touch of wet earth. Unlike many Bordeaux reds, this wine sees no oak aging, allowing the purity of the fruit to shine through without the mask of vanilla or toast. On the palate, it is medium-to-full-bodied and technically dry, with a residual sugar level of just 0.1 g/l. The texture is remarkably round and powerful, featuring silky, polished tannins that frame a core of concentrated red and black fruit flavors. The finish is persistent and fresh, highlighting the limestone minerality of the terroir.
Produced by Vignobles Lassagne under the direction of Nicolas Lassagne, this wine represents a modern approach to traditional Bordeaux. The estate is currently in conversion to organic farming, emphasizing environmental stewardship and soil health. Winemaking is handled with a focus on fruit preservation; after a manual harvest and careful sorting, the wine undergoes fermentation and is aged solely in cement tanks for eight months. This "unwooded" technique preserves the varietal's natural vibrancy and the specific character of the Lussac terroir.
This fruit-driven, structured Cabernet is an excellent match for American barbecue dishes. It pairs beautifully with slow-smoked beef brisket, where the wine's ripe fruit cuts through the rich fat and smoke. Alternatively, try it with a grilled bison burger topped with caramelized onions and sharp cheddar, or a classic hanger steak with chimichurri sauce. While 2022 scores are still rolling in, the previous vintage received 92 points from Wine Enthusiast, and the 2022 was awarded 88 points, offering solid value for a single-vineyard Bordeaux.
