Description
Gonet-Medeville, Champagne Brut Premier Cru Tradition
This exquisite Grower Champagne represents the harmonious marriage of two esteemed winemaking families, led by Julie Gonet and Xavier Medeville. The wine is a thoughtfully composed blend of 70% Chardonnay, 25% Pinot Noir, and 5% Pinot Meunier. The fruit is sourced primarily from the chalk-rich Premier Cru slopes of Bisseuil in the Marne Valley, with significant contributions from the Grand Cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger for the Chardonnay and Mareuil-sur-Aÿ for the Pinot Meunier. As a Non-Vintage cuvée, it blends a fresh base vintage with approximately 20% reserve wines to ensure consistency and depth, capturing the essence of the region's limestone terroir.
The winemaking philosophy at Gonet-Medeville sets this bottle apart from many of its peers. The estate employs sustainable farming methods, with many plots farmed organically to protect the vitality of the soil. In the cellar, Xavier Medeville makes the distinct choice to block malolactic fermentation entirely, preserving the wine's natural, racy acidity and tension. Fermentation takes place partially in stainless steel vats and partially in old oak casks (roughly 10-30%), a technique that imparts texture and breadth without aggressive oak flavors. The wine is aged on its lees for a minimum of 24 to 36 months before disgorgement, allowing autolytic complexity to develop while maintaining a low dosage of around 6 to 7 grams per liter.
In the glass, the wine displays a brilliant pale straw hue with golden highlights and a fine, energetic bead. The nose is expressive and complex, offering aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruits like Golden Delicious apple and pear, layered with notes of lemon zest, white flowers, and a distinct scent of toasted brioche and salted almonds. On the palate, this Champagne is medium-bodied and technically dry, defined by a vibrant, electric acidity that drives the structure. Flavors of white cherry, blood orange peel, and grapefruit granita mingle with a savory, chalky minerality. The finish is long, saline, and precise, leaving a refreshing sensation of citrus oil and fresh hazelnut.
Given its high acidity and textural richness, this Champagne is incredibly versatile at the table. It pairs exceptionally well with American classics like crispy Southern fried chicken, where the wine's cutting acidity cleanses the palate of the savory fats. Alternatively, try it with seared scallops in a lemon-butter sauce or a lobster roll; the citrus notes in the wine will elevate the sweetness of the shellfish. Critics have consistently recognized the quality of this bottling, with Wine Advocate frequently awarding it 92 points and Wine Spectator scoring it 91 points. It is widely considered one of the best value Premier Cru Champagnes on the market, offering Grand Cru caliber complexity at a remarkably accessible price point.
