Description
Chateau Cambon Beaujolais “100 Percent Gamay” – 2024
This cuvée is a pure, unadulterated expression of 100% Gamay, eschewing complicated blends to highlight the varietal's inherent charm. The fruit is sourced from vines aged up to 80 years, planted as far back as 1914 in the zone between Morgon and Brouilly. These ancient vines provide a natural depth and concentration that belies the wine's youthful exuberance.
The 2024 vintage in Beaujolais was defined by a moderately warm growing season punctuated by consistent rainfall, creating ideal conditions for happy, well-hydrated vines. An earlier-than-average harvest allowed the team to capture the fruit at peak freshness, locking in vibrant acidity before sugar levels spiked. The vines are rooted in the region's classic granite and clay-calcareous soils, which impart a distinctive stony minerality that anchors the fruit profile.
In the glass, the wine presents a brilliant, youthful ruby color with fetching purple highlights that suggest its freshness. The nose is an explosion of primary red fruits, dominated by aromas of crushed raspberries, wild strawberries, and ripe Morello cherries, mingling with delicate floral notes of crushed violets and a pinch of black pepper. On the palate, this is a light-bodied and definitively dry wine, driven by a refreshing acidity that makes it incredibly sessionable. The flavor profile confirms the nose with a juicy burst of red berries, supported by tannins that are soft and silky rather than gripping. The finish is clean, persistent, and marked by a lovely lingering taste of fruit and savory spice.
Produced by the Lapierre family and Jean-Claude Chanudet—pioneers of the natural wine movement—the farming adheres to strict sustainable and organic practices to maintain vineyard biodiversity. In the cellar, the philosophy is one of minimal intervention: fermentation is spontaneous, utilizing native yeasts in concrete tanks to preserve the raw energy of the grapes. Notably, the winemaking team avoids oak aging altogether for this cuvée, allowing the pure fruit of the Gamay to shine, and bottles with minimal filtration and only a tiny touch of sulfur.
This versatile red pairs beautifully with a classic American cheeseburger on the grill, where its bright acidity cuts through the richness of the cheese and beef fat. It is also an excellent match for plank-grilled salmon with a lemon and herb dressing, or a classic BLT sandwich, as the wine's juicy fruit profile complements the ripe summer tomatoes and savory bacon. While specific scores for the 2024 vintage are still being finalized by major critics, the producer's reputation for quality and value ensures this remains a favorite among natural wine advocates.
