Description
Linden Vineyards, Hardscrabble Red 2019
This distinguished red wine is a classic Bordeaux-style blend comprising 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc, and 16% Merlot. The 2019 vintage is widely regarded as exceptional for Virginia reds, defined by a long, hot, and dry summer that extended from July through harvest. These conditions allowed for optimal ripening, resulting in concentrated fruit flavors while maintaining the region's signature elegance. The fruit was sourced exclusively from the estate’s renowned Hardscrabble Vineyard, situated at an elevation of 1,100 to 1,400 feet on the Blue Ridge Mountains. Here, the vines struggle in well-drained, rocky, granite-based soils that contribute immense structure and mineral depth to the final wine.
In the glass, the wine displays a deep, clear ruby hue with moderate viscosity. The nose is complex and inviting, offering primary aromas of red currant and bramble fruit, interwoven with savory secondary notes of dried herbs de Provence and crushed violets. Tertiary nuances of wood smoke, cedar, and cigar box emerge with aeration, reflecting its careful aging. On the palate, this is a medium-bodied, dry wine that prioritizes balance over sheer power. Flavors of dark cherry and wild berries are supported by a backbone of fine-grained, silky tannins and refreshing acidity. The finish is long and polished, leaving a lingering impression of graphite and savory spice.
Winemaker Jim Law employs a "palate-based" philosophy, making harvest and vinification decisions based on taste rather than laboratory numbers. For this vintage, the wine was crafted from a rigorous selection of the vineyard's best blocks. It underwent a patient aging process of 22 months in French oak barrels, 70% of which were new, adding layers of texture without overshadowing the fruit. The farming practices at Linden are meticulous and sustainable, focusing on soil health and canopy management to navigate Virginia's variable climate.
This wine’s structured tannins and savory edge make it a versatile companion for rich, protein-forward dishes. It pairs beautifully with a slow-braised beef brisket, where the wine's acidity cuts through the fatty richness of the meat. Alternatively, try it with an herb-crusted rack of lamb; the herbal notes in the wine will echo the seasoning on the lamb perfectly. Critics have consistently praised this bottling, with scores frequently hovering around 91 points, marking it as a high-value offering that competes with far more expensive Bordeaux blends.
