Description
Stolpman Vineyards L'Avion 2023
This flagship white wine from Stolpman Vineyards is a meticulously crafted blend of 93% Roussanne and 7% Chardonnay. The Roussanne is sourced exclusively from the estate's oldest plantings, specifically Blocks 4 and 7, which date back to 1999 and 2000. These vines are planted along a flat stretch of land that was once a makeshift runway for a local cattle rancher, providing the inspiration for the name "L'Avion" (The Airplane). The small addition of Chardonnay, harvested from Block 10, serves to lift the aromatics and add structural acidity to the naturally rich and oily Roussanne.
The 2023 vintage in Ballard Canyon was defined by a cool, extended growing season that allowed for exceptional phenolic development. Healthy late-season rains delayed bud break, and the absence of extreme heat spikes meant the grapes ripened slowly and evenly. Harvest for the Roussanne stretched into mid-November, making it the last varietal picked. This patience allowed the fruit to achieve a deep, golden "russet" tan—the signature of fully ripe Roussanne—while the region's limestone soils and cold Pacific nights preserved vital acidity. The result is a wine that balances the vintage's plush, seamless character with a vibrant, energetic core.
In the glass, the wine presents a brilliant, deep golden hue, hinting at its viscosity and concentration. The nose is an explosive "bombshell" of aromas, leading with rich notes of honeycomb, toasted brioche, and beeswax. Layers of caramel-drizzled pear, apricot, and yellow roses unfold, supported by a savory undercurrent of chaparral and lanolin. On the palate, this full-bodied, dry white is lavishly textured and mouth-coating, delivering flavors of baked apple, macadamia nut, and vanilla bean. Despite its opulence, a spine of crushed limestone minerality and high-toned freshness keeps the wine upright and focused, culminating in a finish that lingers with notes of warm oak spice and lemon curd.
Stolpman's commitment to conscientious farming is evident in every bottle. The 2023 vintage is Certified Organic and Demeter Certified Biodynamic, reflecting a philosophy that prioritizes soil health and biodiversity. The vineyard is dry-farmed, forcing the vines to root deeply into the limestone bedrock for moisture, which naturally limits yields and intensifies flavor. In the winery, the fruit was fermented in 100% new 500L French oak puncheons to build richness. Following primary fermentation, the wine was racked to a mix of 60% new and 40% neutral French oak puncheons for aging, allowing for a gentle micro-oxygenation that integrates the oak tannins seamlessly without overpowering the fruit.
The wine's profound richness and texture make it a versatile partner for decadent American cuisine. It pairs beautifully with a butter-poached lobster tail or Dungeness crab cakes, where the wine's creamy weight matches the sweetness of the shellfish. Alternatively, try it with a roast chicken stuffed with lemon and herbs, or a roasted butternut squash risotto; the savory herbal notes and acidity in the wine will cut through the richness of the dish while complementing the caramelized flavors.
Critics have already recognized the brilliance of this vintage, with James Suckling awarding it a massive 96 points, praising its "shimmering" honeysuckle notes and "impressively textural" palate. Given its pedigree, labor-intensive farming, and the sheer quality in the glass, L'Avion remains one of the most compelling values in high-end California white wine, offering a Northern Rhône-like experience at a fraction of the price of its French counterparts.
