Description
Sebastien Brunet, “Renaissance” Vouvray SEC 2022
This wine is a pure expression of 100% Chenin Blanc, sourced exclusively from the limestone-rich terroir of the Vouvray appellation in the Loire Valley. The fruit is drawn from vines averaging 50 years of age, situated primarily on the coveted clay and flint (perruches) soils of the Brenne and Rochère vineyards. These mature vines, deeply rooted in the silica-rich topsoil over a calcareous Tuffeau base, impart a distinct structural depth and mineral intensity to the final cuvée. The 2022 vintage was characterized as a "solar" year for the Loire, marked by a hot, dry summer that accelerated ripening. Despite the warmth, the best producers like Brunet managed to preserve the varietal's signature acidity, resulting in a wine that marries the opulence of fully ripe fruit with the tension of a cooler year.
In the glass, the wine pours a brilliant pale gold with shimmering silver and green highlights, indicative of its freshness. The nose is complex and inviting, offering a bouquet of bruised yellow apple, quince, and ripe pear, layered with nuances of white acacia flowers, wet wool, and a striking flinty smokiness derived from the soil. On the palate, this is a quintessential dry Vouvray—medium-bodied and texturally expansive yet firmly dry. It showcases a chiseled, linear acidity that drives flavors of lemon curd, ginger, and tart apricot across the tongue. The finish is long, saline, and mouthwatering, leaving a lingering impression of crushed stone and citrus zest that speaks clearly of its flinty origins.
Sebastien Brunet has quietly become one of the most respected vignerons in Vouvray, championing a philosophy of minimal intervention and meticulous farming. He practices organic viticulture, avoiding chemical herbicides and pesticides to encourage biodiversity in the vineyard. For the "Renaissance" cuvée, grapes are harvested by hand and fermentation is carried out spontaneously with indigenous yeasts. Unlike his entry-level wines which see stainless steel, this cuvée is fermented and aged for approximately 10 months in older, neutral demi-muids (500-liter oak barrels). This gentle wood aging allows for micro-oxygenation, building a creamy mid-palate texture without imparting aggressive oak flavors, preserving the purity of the Chenin Blanc fruit.
This Vouvray’s combination of richness and racy acidity makes it a versatile companion for American cuisine. It pairs exceptionally well with pan-seared scallops served over a sweet corn and bacon succotash; the wine's saline minerality mirrors the seafood while its acidity cuts through the richness of the bacon. For a heartier main course, consider a roast pork loin with an apple-bourbon glaze, where the wine's notes of quince and ginger will harmonize beautifully with the fruit components of the dish. While specific scores for the 2022 vintage are still rolling in, Brunet's "Renaissance" consistently garners high praise, often scoring in the 90-93 point range from critics like Vinous and Wine Advocate in previous years. It represents exceptional value, offering the complexity of a top-tier Loire white at a fraction of the price of similar quality wines.
