Description
Mas Amiel, Vertigo Rouge, Cotes de Roussillon AOC 2023
This vibrant red wine is a Grenache-dominant blend, composed of approximately 80% Grenache Noir, complemented by 20% Syrah and Carignan. The fruit is sourced from younger vines, ranging from 5 to 20 years of age, which contribute to the wine's energetic and accessible profile. These vines are planted on the estate's signature steep slopes in the Agly Valley, where the unique terroir plays a critical role in shaping the final blend.
The 2023 vintage in Roussillon was defined by significant drought conditions, resulting in historically low yields and small, concentrated berries. Despite the heat, the region's distinct calcoschiste (limestone schist) soils allowed the vines to retain remarkable freshness and acidity. The harvest was conducted manually to ensure pristine fruit quality, capturing the intensity of the season while avoiding over-ripeness. The result is a wine that balances the solar power of the vintage with the cooling mineral influence of the stony terroir.
In the glass, the wine displays a brilliant ruby hue with youthful purple reflections. The nose is immediately expressive and floral, offering lifting aromas of fresh red raspberries, crushed cherries, and wild strawberries, interwoven with fragrant notes of violet, peony, and fresh rose petals. On the palate, this is a dry, medium-to-full-bodied red that prioritizes purity of fruit. The texture is notably silky and supple, with fine-grained tannins that provide structure without aggression. Flavors of juicy blackberry and red plum are accented by a subtle spiciness and a distinct graphite minerality that lingers on the refreshing finish.
Mas Amiel is a pioneer in the region, having achieved organic certification in 2017 and full biodynamic conversion (Biodyvin) by 2020. Their philosophy emphasizes minimal intervention to let the terroir speak. For the Vertigo Rouge, winemaking is strictly focused on preserving primary fruit characteristics. The grapes undergo fermentation in stainless steel followed by six months of aging in concrete vats. No oak is used, ensuring the wine remains precise, digestible, and true to its varietal origins.
This wine's fresh acidity and savory herbal undertones make it an excellent companion for American bistro-style cuisine. It pairs beautifully with grilled lamb chops seasoned with rosemary and garlic, where the wine's fruit cuts through the richness of the meat. Alternatively, try it with a charred burger topped with gruyère and caramelized onions, or a roasted eggplant parmesan, as the wine's tannins are gentle enough to complement vegetarian dishes with robust textures.
Critics have recognized the quality of this vintage, with Bettane & Desseauve awarding it a notable 92 points. It represents exceptional value in its class, offering the complexity of Roussillon terroir at an approachable price point.
