Description
Mas Amiel, Natural Grenache, Cotes de Catalanes IGP 2022
This vibrant, expressive red wine is a single-varietal cuvée composed of 100% Grenache Noir. Sourced from the estate's specific plots in the Cabirou and Devèze localities, the vines are rooted in the Roussillon's distinctive calco-schist (limestone and schist) soils. These nutrient-poor, heat-retaining soils are essential to the wine's mineral backbone and aromatic depth.
The 2022 vintage in Roussillon was characterized by intense heat and drought, earning it the title of a "winemaker's vintage" where precise harvest timing was crucial. Despite the warm conditions, Mas Amiel's biodynamic farming practices and the high-altitude vineyard sites helped preserve remarkable freshness and acidity in the grapes. The harvest was conducted entirely by hand with rigorous double sorting to ensure only pristine fruit entered the winery, resulting in a wine that balances the solar intensity of the region with a surprising, energetic lift.
In the glass, the wine displays a deep, dark ruby hue with violet highlights. The nose is pure and unadorned, offering an explosion of primary fruit aromas including ripe black cherries, fresh crushed grapes, and sloe berries, accented by a distinctive cooling note of wild mint and garrigue herbs. On the palate, this medium-bodied wine is dry but texturally generous, featuring a creamy, velvety mouthfeel derived from the fruit's natural concentration rather than oak. Flavors of juicy blackberry and raspberry coulis mingle with a stony minerality, supported by soft, dusting tannins and a vibrant streak of acidity that keeps the finish long and "highly digestible."
Mas Amiel is a pioneer in the region, having achieved full organic and biodynamic certification (Biodyvin) for its 170-hectare estate. For this "Natural" cuvée, the winemaking philosophy is one of absolute minimal intervention. Fermentation occurs in 50-hectoliter stainless steel vats using only indigenous yeasts. Instead of aggressive pump-overs, the winemaker utilizes a gentle "infusion" technique to extract flavor and color without harsh tannins. The wine is then aged in concrete vats to preserve its fruit purity and is bottled without any added sulfites (SO2-free) or filtration, ensuring an authentic expression of the terroir.
This Grenache's fresh fruit profile and lack of oak make it an excellent companion for American barbecue and grilled dishes. It pairs beautifully with a grilled hanger steak served with a fresh chimichurri sauce, where the wine's herbal minty notes echo the parsley and cilantro. Alternatively, try it with slow-smoked pulled pork shoulder topped with a vinegar-based slaw; the wine's bright acidity will cut through the rich fat while its fruitiness complements the smoky bark.
While specific major critic reviews for the 2022 vintage of this exact bottling are still emerging, the "Natural" series from Mas Amiel consistently garners high praise for its purity and precision, with previous vintages and sister cuvées often scoring in the 90-92 point range from outlets like Wine Advocate and Decanter. It represents exceptional value in the world of biodynamic natural wines, offering a clean, fault-free experience that rivals more expensive bottlings from Châteauneuf-du-Pape.
