Description
Hanzell Vineyards Sebella Chardonnay – 2023
This vibrant expression of Sonoma mountain terroir is composed of 100% Chardonnay, sourced exclusively from the younger vines of the estate's "Day" and "Zellerbach" blocks. These vines, averaging 17 years of age, are propagated from the heritage Hanzell clone, a selection renowned for producing small berries with intense flavor concentration and a distinct sense of place. Situated within the prestigious Moon Mountain District AVA, the vineyards sit at elevations ranging from 415 to 600 feet on complex volcanic and clay-loam soils. The 2023 vintage was characterized by a wet winter that replenished soil moisture, followed by a mild spring and a remarkably cool summer. These conditions allowed for an extended hang time, preserving natural acidity while developing deep phenolic maturity.
In the glass, the wine displays a brilliant, clear lemon-gold hue with moderate viscosity. The nose is highly aromatic, offering a complex bouquet of primary fruit notes such as Meyer lemon, juicy nectarine, and mango, interwoven with floral scents of honeysuckle and jasmine. Secondary nuances of wet stone and a chalky minerality provide depth, hinting at the volcanic soils. On the palate, this wine is medium-bodied and dry, defined by an energetic tension between fruit and structure. Flavors of crisp pear, lemon meringue, and a subtle touch of fresh brioche unfold on the tongue. The texture is precise and lifted, driven by a vivid, mouthwatering acidity that carries the wine into a long, persistent finish marked by lingering notes of orange blossom and spicy ginger.
Hanzell's commitment to stewardship is evident in their CCOF Certified Organic farming practices, which utilize a holistic, regenerative approach involving animals to maintain a thriving ecosystem without synthetic chemicals. In the cellar, the winemaking philosophy emphasizes purity and freshness. The juice is fermented using native yeasts in stainless steel tanks to capture the varietal's essence. Maturation takes place over six months in neutral French oak barrels, and notably, the wine does not undergo malolactic fermentation. This decision preserves the zesty malic acid, ensuring the wine remains bright and focused rather than heavy or buttery.
This Chardonnay is exceptionally food-friendly and pairs beautifully with American coastal cuisine. It is an ideal match for pan-seared halibut topped with a lemon-caper sauce, as the wine's piercing acidity cuts through the richness of the fish while mirroring the citrus elements. Alternatively, try it with a classic roast chicken served with herbed potatoes; the wine's savory brioche undertones and herbal lift complement the roasted skin and earthy herbs perfectly. For a lighter option, a creamy goat cheese and arugula salad highlights the wine's mineral and floral characteristics.
Critics have responded enthusiastically to this vintage, recognizing its exceptional quality-to-price ratio for the region. James Suckling awarded the wine a stellar 95 points, praising it as "precise and focused," while Wine Spectator bestowed 90 points, highlighting its "bright and lemony" profile. Representing the younger vines of this legendary estate, the Sebella offers an accessible yet sophisticated entry point into the world of Hanzell, delivering pedigree and complexity that rivals far more expensive bottlings from the Moon Mountain District.
