Elvio Tintero Moscato d' Asti "Sori Gramella" 2024
This wine is a pure, vibrant expression of 100% Moscato Bianco (Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains), sourced exclusively from the "Sorì Gramella" single vineyard in the commune of Mango. In the local Piedmontese dialect, a "sorì" refers to the sunniest, south-facing slopes of a hill—the most prized sites for achieving optimal ripeness. The Gramella vineyard is characterized by a steep gradient exceeding 20% and sits at an elevation of approximately 300 meters. The soil composition is a classic mix of calcareous clay and limestone, which imparts a distinctive mineral backbone to the wine's lush fruit profile.
The 2024 vintage in Piedmont was defined by a dynamic growing season. A wet spring provided essential water reserves, followed by a hot summer that ensured full phenological ripeness. Crucially, the weeks leading up to harvest saw significant diurnal temperature shifts—warm days and cool nights—which helped preserve the grape's vital acidity and complex aromatic precursors. The Tintero family, now in its fourth generation, farms these difficult slopes using sustainable methods, avoiding systemic chemicals to protect the vineyard's biodiversity. In the cellar, the wine is produced using the Martinotti (Charmat) method. A unique practice at Tintero is to keep the must at low temperatures and only ferment small batches upon receiving orders; this ensures the wine in the bottle is as fresh and aromatic as possible. The fermentation is halted early to retain the grape's natural sugars and create the delicate frizzante effervescence.
In the glass, the "Sori Gramella" pours a brilliant pale straw-yellow, illuminated by faint green highlights and a persistent, fine bead of bubbles. The nose offers an explosive, kaleidoscopic bouquet typical of high-quality Moscato: intense aromas of white peach, apricot nectar, and mandarin orange are interwoven with fragrant notes of honeysuckle, citrus blossom, and a hint of fresh sage. On the palate, this is a light-bodied and sweet wine, yet it is impeccably balanced. A razor-sharp acidity cuts through the residual sugar (often around 120 g/L), preventing any cloying sensation and lifting the flavors of honeyed pear and candied lemon peel. The finish is clean, refreshing, and remarkably long, leaving a lingering impression of floral perfume and wet stone.
While major professional critic scores for the 2024 vintage have not yet been released, the "Sori Gramella" is widely considered a benchmark for single-vineyard Moscato d'Asti and a perennial "Best Buy" in the global market. Its low alcohol (typically 5.5%) and vibrant energy make it exceptionally food-friendly, particularly with American cuisine. It pairs beautifully with a classic strawberry and rhubarb pie; the wine's stone fruit notes complement the berry filling, while its acidity slices through the richness of the buttery crust. For a savory contrast, try it with spicy Nashville hot chicken. The wine's sweetness instantly tames the fiery heat of the cayenne paste, while the bubbles cleanse the palate, preparing you for the next bite.
