Description
Clement & Florian Berthier, Coteaux du Giennois Blanc 2022
This vibrant white wine is a pristine expression of 100% Sauvignon Blanc, hailing from the Coteaux du Giennois appellation in the Central Loire Valley. Situated just north of the renowned Sancerre region, the vineyards occupy a unique terroir composed of a mix of flint (silex) and limestone soils. This geological combination is crucial, with the limestone providing structural acidity and the flint imparting a distinctive smoky minerality. The 2022 vintage was characterized as a "solar" year in the Loire, featuring a warm and dry growing season that ensured excellent ripeness and concentration in the grapes, while the region's naturally cool evenings helped preserve the variety's signature freshness.
In the glass, the wine displays a brilliant pale straw color with flashes of silver, indicating its youthful energy. The nose is aromatic and expressive, opening with intense notes of grapefruit zest, green apple, and white peach, underpinned by a subtle, flinty smokiness often described as "gunflint." On the palate, this is a medium-bodied, texturally pleasing wine that balances the ripeness of the vintage with a nervous tension. The flavor profile is dominated by citrus and exotic fruit notes, including passionfruit and lime, leading to a finish that is crisp, saline, and remarkably persistent. Technically, this is a dry wine, with the natural fruit sweetness fully fermented out to showcase the mineral backbone.
Clément and Florian Berthier represent the fifth generation of winemakers at the estate and have shifted the philosophy toward rigorous environmental stewardship. The vineyards are managed using organic farming practices, avoiding synthetic chemicals to encourage soil health and biodiversity. In the cellar, the focus is on transparency; the grapes undergo temperature-controlled fermentation in stainless steel tanks to preserve primary fruit aromatics. Following fermentation, the wine is aged on its fine lees (sur lie) for several months, a technique that softens the acidity and adds a creamy weight to the mid-palate without the use of oak.
While this specific bottling has not yet been rated by major American publications like Wine Spectator or The Wine Advocate, the Berthier brothers are widely recognized for producing wines that offer exceptional quality relative to price, often outperforming more expensive neighbors in Sancerre. This wine shines when paired with fresh, acid-driven American coastal cuisine. It pairs beautifully with Pan-Seared Scallops with Lemon Butter, where the wine's citrus notes cut through the richness of the butter while complementing the sweetness of the scallops. Alternatively, serve it with a Warm Goat Cheese and Spinach Salad; the tangy chevre and earthy greens are a classic match for the herbal and mineral complexity of the Sauvignon Blanc.
