Description
Castell d'Age Cava Reserva Brut Nature "Anne Marie"
This wine is a classic, meticulously crafted blend of 40% Xarel-lo, 40% Macabeu, and 20% Parellada. The fruit is exclusively sourced from the family's Can Pujades, Can Gener, and Can Aguilera estates within the Penedès region of Catalonia, Spain. These vineyards sit at altitudes between 280 and 310 meters, enjoying a Mediterranean climate that ensures optimal ripening while preserving acidity. The soil profile is particularly distinctive for the region, featuring a mix of slate and clay-limestone; the slate offers a unique mineral backbone often rare in Cava, while the calcareous clay contributes volume and structure.
Castell d'Age is renowned as a pioneer in the region, driven by the philosophy of its matriarch, Anne Marie Comtesse. The winery practices certified organic and biodynamic farming (Demeter certified), emphasizing biodiversity and a holistic connection to the earth. To preserve freshness and prevent oxidation, the grapes are harvested at night when temperatures are coolest. Following a traditional first fermentation, the wine undergoes a secondary fermentation in the bottle and is aged for a minimum of 20 months on the lees in underground cellars. This extended aging qualifies it as a Reserva, adding significant textural complexity to the final wine.
In the glass, the Anne Marie displays a brilliant straw-yellow hue with subtle green highlights. A fine, persistent bead rises to form a delicate crown of mousse, signaling its quality production. The nose is expressive and layered, offering primary aromas of ripe orchard fruits like golden delicious apple and pear, interwoven with sophisticated secondary notes of fresh butter, brioche, and almond skin derived from the extended lees contact. As the wine opens, faint hints of dried apricots and a stony minerality emerge, adding depth to the bouquet.
On the palate, this Cava is medium-bodied and impeccably dry (Brut Nature), containing less than 0.8g/L of residual sugar. The lack of dosage allows the purity of the fruit and terroir to shine, supported by a vibrant, racy acidity that cleanses the palate. The texture is creamy and silky, a result of the fine integration of carbon dioxide and autolytic aging. Flavors of crisp green apple, lemon zest, and toasted hazelnut dominate, leading into a finish that is long, savory, and refreshing.
The wine's structural integrity and bone-dry profile make it a versatile companion for dining. It pairs exceptionally well with pan-seared scallops served with a lemon-caper butter; the wine's acidity cuts through the richness of the butter while echoing the sweetness of the shellfish. For a classic American pairing, try it with a California Cobb salad. The effervescence and acidity will scrub the palate clean after bites of creamy avocado, salty bacon, and rich blue cheese, creating a perfect balance. Alternatively, it is a stunning match for fried chicken, where the bubbles provide a textural contrast to the crispy coating.
While specific vintage scores vary, this cuvée consistently garners praise for its exceptional value, often receiving ratings in the high 80s to low 90s from aggregators and critics like the International Wine Challenge. It represents an affordable entry point into the world of complex, biodynamic sparkling wines.
