Description
Alain Jaume Domaine Grand Veneur, CDR Blanc, Les Champauvins 2024
This distinct white wine is a single-varietal expression produced entirely from 100% Viognier. Unlike many Côtes du Rhône whites which are blends, this cuvée highlights the aromatic purity of Viognier grown on the celebrated "Les Champauvins" lieu-dit. This specific vineyard block sits just three meters outside the northern border of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, sharing the same prestigious terroir but offering exceptional value.
The 2024 vintage in the Southern Rhône was characterized by a cool, wet spring that required rigorous vineyard management to combat mildew, followed by a warm, dry late summer that ensured optimal ripening. These conditions favored white wines, preserving vital acidity and aromatic definition. The vines are rooted in clay-sandy and limestone soils (argilo-sablonneux et calcaires), which are crucial for maintaining freshness in Viognier. This soil composition allows for a slow, steady maturation that develops complex aromatics without sacrificing the grape's natural acidity.
In the glass, the wine presents a bright, limpid pale yellow color with shimmering gold highlights. The nose is intense and delicate, offering a bouquet of white-fleshed fruits including white peach and Williams pear, layered with heady notes of honeysuckle, bergamot, and a touch of fresh apricot that emerges with aeration. On the palate, this wine is medium-bodied and dry, displaying a remarkable balance between the varietal's natural oiliness and a zesty, mineral-driven tension. Flavors of blanched almond and tangerine zest complicate the stone fruit core, leading to a finish that is airy, persistent, and thoroughly refreshing.
The Jaume family is a staunch advocate for organic viticulture, and this wine is produced from certified organic grapes. The winemaking philosophy emphasizes the preservation of primary fruit and terroir expression. Grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and crushed before undergoing fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks at a cool 12°C (54°F). There is no oak aging; instead, the wine is bottled early, approximately four months after harvest, to capture its youthful vibrancy and floral lift.
This Viognier's aromatic richness and textural weight make it a versatile partner for American cuisine. It pairs beautifully with pan-seared halibut topped with a lemon-caper butter, where the wine's acidity cuts the richness while its fruit complements the sweet fish. Alternatively, try it with Maryland-style crab cakes; the sweet, delicate crab meat echoes the stone fruit notes of the wine, while the remoulade sauce finds a counterpoint in the wine's mineral finish. For a lighter option, a roasted chicken salad with slivered almonds and grapes highlights the wine's nutty undertones and fruit-forward profile.
Critics have praised this vintage for its poise and drinkability. James Suckling awarded the 2024 vintage a score of 91 points, noting its "seductive" character and "vivid finish." Given its pedigree as a "baby Châteauneuf" neighbor and its organic certification, it remains one of the most compelling values in its class.
