Description
Adegas Gran Vinum Albariño Seleccion Especial 2023
This exceptional white wine is a single-varietal expression composed of 100% Albariño. It is sourced exclusively from the "Miranda Aurosa" vineyard, a specific plot within the Val do Salnés sub-region of Rías Baixas, Spain. The vines here average 50 years of age, digging deep into decomposed granitic and sandy soils that overlook the Ría de Arousa. This proximity to the Atlantic Ocean imparts the grape's signature salinity. The 2023 vintage was a dynamic season characterized by a wet, challenging spring that required diligent vineyard management, followed by a warm, dry summer. This shift allowed for excellent maturation, resulting in a harvest officially rated as "very good" for its balance of ripe fruit character and preserved acidity.
In the glass, the wine presents a brilliant pale straw-yellow hue with energetic green reflections, indicative of its freshness. The nose is highly aromatic and complex, offering a bouquet of white peach, crisp green apple, and fresh lime zest. These primary fruit notes are beautifully complicated by secondary aromas of white blossoms, lemongrass, and a profound, crushed-shell minerality that speaks clearly of its seaside terroir. On the palate, this is a dry, medium-bodied white that distinguishes itself with a surprising physical density. The texture is rich and mouth-coating—without being heavy—balanced by a spine of electric, zesty acidity. Flavors of Meyer lemon and apricot wash across the tongue, leading into a finish that is remarkably long, clean, and saline.
Adegas Gran Vinum is a family-owned winery dedicated to traditional farming and minimal intervention to let the terroir shine. A key differentiator for this "Seleccion Especial" is the winemaking process: after fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine undergoes seven months of aging on its lees with weekly stirring (bâtonnage). This labor-intensive technique is responsible for the wine's creamier mouthfeel and structural complexity, setting it apart from lighter, simpler styles of Albariño.
The wine's high acidity and saline character make it a versatile partner for American coastal cuisine. It pairs beautifully with a buttery New England lobster roll; the wine's sharp acidity cuts through the richness of the drawn butter while highlighting the sweetness of the lobster meat. Alternatively, try it with grilled shrimp tacos topped with mango salsa, where the wine's tropical fruit undertones will complement the salsa while its mineral edge cleanses the palate after the char of the grill.
Critics have praised this vintage highly. Wine Review Online awarded the 2023 vintage a stellar 94 points, with editor Michael Franz describing it as "state-of-the-art juice" and noting its impressive density. Given this critical acclaim, it remains an outstanding value in its class, offering a level of complexity often found in much more expensive white wines.
