Bodegas Santiago Ruiz – Rias Baixas Albarino 2023
Often regarded as the "Father of AlbariƱo," Bodegas Santiago Ruiz produces one of the most iconic white wines from Galicia, specifically from the prestigious O Rosal sub-zone. While AlbariƱo is the driving force, this wine is actually a traditional O Rosal blend, offering more complexity than a single-varietal bottling. The 2023 vintage is composed of 82% AlbariƱo, 8% Loureiro, 6.5% CaiƱo Blanco, 2% Treixadura, and 1.5% Godello. Each variety is harvested and vinified separately to preserve its unique contribution: AlbariƱo provides the structure and fruit, Loureiro adds intense herbal aromatics, and the minority grapes contribute body and acidity.
The 2023 vintage in RĆas Baixas was defined by a wet winter followed by a warm spring and hot summer, which accelerated the ripening process. Despite challenges with mildew due to the humidityāa common trait of the "Green Spain" Atlantic climateācareful canopy management allowed for a healthy harvest that began early on August 30th. The vineyards are located in the O Rosal sub-region, the most southerly part of the appellation along the MiƱo River. Here, the vines benefit from sandy, alluvial soils and a warmer microclimate compared to the northern Val do SalnĆ©s, resulting in wines with greater weight and ripeness, tempered by the cooling Atlantic breezes.
In the glass, the wine displays a clear, bright straw-yellow hue with characteristic greenish reflections indicative of its youth. The nose is highly aromatic and expressiveāa hallmark of the Loureiro grape's presenceāoffering intense layers of orchard fruit like crisp green apple and pear, mingled with stone fruits such as apricot. These primary notes are elevated by distinct herbal and balsamic nuances, specifically lemon verbena, bay leaf, and a touch of aniseed, grounded by a wet-stone mineral backbone. On the palate, this is a dry, medium-bodied wine with a rich, almost oily texture derived from the lees contact. It balances ripe fruit flavors with a vibrant, mouth-watering acidity that leads to a long, saline finish, leaving a refreshing sensation of ocean spray.
Bodegas Santiago Ruiz is a pioneer of sustainable viticulture in the region, employing traditional trellis systems (parras) to maximize airflow and sun exposure. The winemaking process is meticulous: grapes are hand-harvested and undergo a crucial 15-20 hour maceration with their skins at cool temperatures prior to fermentation. This technique, pioneered by Santiago Ruiz, extracts the maximum aromatic potential from the skins. Fermentation takes place in small stainless steel tanks at controlled temperatures (16°C), and the wine is aged on its fine lees for a short period to enhance texture and structural complexity before the final blending.
For food pairings, this wine's combination of weight and high acidity makes it incredibly versatile with American cuisine. It pairs exceptionally well with a New England lobster roll; the wine's acidity cuts through the rich butter and mayonnaise while complementing the sweet shellfish meat. For a Southern twist, try blackened redfish or catfish; the wine's fruit intensity stands up to the spicy Cajun rub, and the herbal notes echo the seasoning. Alternatively, lemon-herb roasted chicken is a perfect match, as the wine's citrus and verbena notes mirror the rosemary and lemon zest in the dish.
The 2023 vintage has maintained the estate's high standards, garnering a 93-point score from GuĆa Repsol and consistent praise from critics like Tim Atkin (90 points) and GuĆa PeƱĆn (90 points). It also received a Bronze Medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards. Given its pedigree, complexity, and the history behind the label, it remains an outstanding value in the world of premium Spanish whites, offering a level of sophistication often found in wines twice the price.
