Description
Chateau Pontet-Canet Pauillac 2014
This Fifth Growth Pauillac has firmly established itself as a "Super Second" in quality, often rivaling the First Growths in complexity and depth. The 2014 vintage is a meticulously crafted Left Bank blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 1% Petit Verdot. It represents a harmonious marriage of power and elegance, showcasing the estate's dedication to precision viticulture.
The 2014 growing season in Bordeaux was defined by a "miracle" Indian summer. After a cool and damp July and August that slowed ripening, a warm, dry September and October allowed the grapes to achieve optimal maturity while retaining vibrant acidity. Grown on the estate’s signature Quaternary gravel soils over a clay-limestone subsoil, the fruit expresses the classic mineral tension of the Pauillac terroir.
In the glass, the wine presents a deep, opaque garnet hue with a vibrant purple rim, indicating excellent viscosity. The nose is profound and aromatic, offering intense layers of crème de cassis, crushed blackberries, and warm plum preserves, interwoven with signature Pauillac notes of graphite, cedar chest, and a hint of crushed violets. On the palate, this is a full-bodied and dry wine, defined by a rock-solid structure of fine-grained, ripe tannins and energetic acidity. The flavor profile expands to include dark chocolate, tobacco leaf, and a distinct mineral salinity, leading to a finish that is incredibly long, savory, and precise.
Chateau Pontet-Canet is a pioneer in biodynamics, and 2014 marked the first vintage the estate was fully certified by Demeter. Under the guidance of technical director Jean-Michel Comme, the vineyards were worked by horses to prevent soil compaction. The winemaking was equally innovative, with the wine aged for 16 months in a unique combination of vessels: 50% new French oak barrels, 35% custom concrete amphorae (dolia) made with soil from the vineyard, and 15% one-year-old barrels. This heavy reliance on amphorae preserves the purity of the fruit and minimizes aggressive oak influence.
For food pairings, this structured red requires rich, protein-heavy dishes to balance its tannins. It pairs exceptionally well with a dry-aged bone-in ribeye steak served with truffle butter, as the fat content softens the wine's structure while the earthy truffle echoes its tertiary notes. Alternatively, try a slow-smoked beef brisket with a peppercorn crust; the smoky char and tender meat complement the wine’s graphite and spice characteristics perfectly.
Critics have lauded this vintage as a triumph, with James Suckling awarding it 98 points and Robert Parker's Wine Advocate giving it 95 points. It remains a remarkable value proposition in the world of fine Bordeaux, offering near-First Growth quality at a fraction of the price, suitable for drinking now with a long decant or cellaring for another two decades.
