Description
Mas Amiel Maury Vintage Blanc
This wine is a distinctive and celebrated Vin Doux Naturel (sweet fortified wine) produced primarily from 100% Grenache Gris, though some vintages may include small percentages of Maccabeu or Grenache Blanc. Sourced from the estate's historic parcels in the Agly Valley, the vines are rooted in the region's signature disintegrated black schist soils. These nutrient-poor, heat-retaining soils, combined with the Roussillon's intense sunshine and the cooling Tramontane winds, allow the grapes to achieve optimal ripeness while preserving the vital acidity necessary for balancing the wine's natural sweetness.
In the glass, the wine presents a brilliant, limpid pale gold hue with shimmering silver or green reflections, indicating its freshness and lack of oxidative aging. The nose is intensely aromatic and pure, bursting with primary fruit notes of white peach, juicy pear, and apricot, layered with vibrant citrus zest—particularly grapefruit and mandarin. Secondary aromas emerge with aeration, revealing delicate floral scents of honeysuckle and acacia, along with subtle hints of fresh almond and a distinct mineral quality derived from the schist terroir.
On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and sweet, yet it defies heaviness through a remarkable backbone of acidity. The texture is luscious and velvety, coating the mouth with flavors of candied lemon, exotic fruits, and a touch of white pepper. Unlike the estate's oxidative wines (which are aged in glass demi-johns and oak), the Vintage Blanc is defined by its fruit-forward vibrancy. The finish is long, clean, and persistent, leaving a refreshing sensation of minerality and citrus pith that cleanses the palate despite the residual sugar.
Mas Amiel is a pioneer in the region, having converted to organic farming in 2014 and achieving Biodyvin biodynamic certification. The winemaking reflects this philosophy of minimal intervention and purity. Grapes are hand-harvested and sorted to ensure only the healthiest fruit is used. The wine undergoes direct pressing followed by fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. The fermentation is stopped midway by the addition of neutral grape spirit (a process known as mutage sur moûts), which preserves the natural grape sugars. The wine is then aged in stainless steel vats for several months to protect it from oxygen and maintain its fresh, fruity profile before bottling.
For food pairings, this wine offers versatility beyond the dessert course. It pairs beautifully with a classic American Southern peach cobbler, where the wine's stone fruit notes echo the dessert while its acidity cuts through the rich, buttery crust. Alternatively, try it with a savory appetizer of seared foie gras on toasted brioche with a apricot compote; the wine's sweetness complements the richness of the liver perfectly. It also serves as an excellent partner to a cheese board featuring pungent blue cheeses like Roquefort or a domestic blue, served with honeycomb and marcona almonds.
Critics consistently praise the Mas Amiel Maury Vintage Blanc for its precision and balance. The Revue du Vin de France has frequently awarded it scores in the 92-94 point range, highlighting its "crystalline purity" and "digestibility." It is widely considered a benchmark for the Maury appellation and offers exceptional value relative to its quality and pedigree in the world of fortified wines.
