Description
Tenuta Casali Baruccia 2016
This distinct red wine is a pure expression of 100% Sangiovese, sourced exclusively from the Vigna Baruccia vineyard in the heart of the Romagna DOC Sangiovese Superiore appellation. The vines, planted in 1991, are situated on steep river terrace slopes where the soil composition is a complex mix of stony, medium-textured earth and the region's characteristic white clay, known locally as calanco romagnolo. This unique terroir imparts a defining mineral backbone to the final wine. The 2016 vintage in Emilia-Romagna was widely considered excellent, characterized by a balanced growing season with favorable weather that allowed for optimal polyphenolic ripening while preserving the grape's natural freshness and aromatic precursors.
Committed to environmental stewardship, Tenuta Casali employs organic farming practices to cultivate their fruit. The grapes were harvested by hand in early October to ensure perfect ripeness. In the cellar, the winemaking follows a traditional approach, featuring fermentation followed by a 12 to 15-day maceration on the skins to extract color and structure. The wine was then aged for approximately five to six months in a combination of used French oak barriques and larger Slavonian oak barrels. This careful wood regimen adds subtle complexity without overpowering the vibrant fruit profile. In the glass, the wine presents a luminous ruby red color with good clarity.
The nose is elegant and complex, opening with primary aromas of ripe red cherry and plum, gracefully integrated with secondary notes of crushed violets, licorice, and a touch of balsamic spice reminiscent of cinnamon. On the palate, this is a dry, medium-bodied wine that demonstrates excellent equilibrium. The high acidity, a hallmark of the Sangiovese varietal, provides freshness and momentum, while the well-integrated, supple tannins lead to a persistent, savory finish. Ideally suited for food, this wine pairs beautifully with a gourmet burger topped with fontina cheese and sautéed mushrooms; the wine's acidity cuts through the richness of the cheese and meat while complementing the earthiness of the mushrooms. It is also an excellent match for slow-roasted pork shoulder with a fennel and herb crust, as the savory herbal notes harmonize with the wine's balsamic character. The renowned Italian guide Veronelli awarded the 2016 vintage a score of 87/100, recognizing its quality and authentic character.
