Description
ColleStefano Verdicchio di Matelica 2024
This wine is a pristine example of 100% Verdicchio di Matelica, crafted entirely from estate-grown fruit using specific Matelica clones propagated through massal selection. Produced by the ColleStefano estate, a pioneer in the region practicing certified organic farming since 1995, it reflects the unique, high-altitude terroir of the landlocked Matelica valley. Situated at elevations of 420 to 450 meters, the vineyards sit on limestone-rich soils composed of sand, loam, and clay. The continental climate here provides significant diurnal temperature shifts, which are crucial for preserving the grape's natural acidity. The 2024 vintage in Marche was a productive season marked by a recovery in yields, resulting in a wine that captures a distinctively spicy and vegetal character reminiscent of the 2018 and 2020 vintages.
In the glass, the 2024 ColleStefano presents a characteristically luminous, pale straw-yellow hue. The nose is complex and evolving, initially offering delicate notes of green apple, citron, and Bosc pear, which give way to floral aromatics of anise blossoms and hawthorn. Beneath the primary fruit lies a compelling layer of wet stone minerality and specific vintage-driven herbal nuances of fern, cardamom, and a hint of green pepper. On the palate, this is a dry, medium-bodied white wine defined by its "electric" acidity and vibrant energy. While the vintage displays slightly more body than previous years, it remains taut and focused. Flavors of lemon zest, almond, and citron are persistent, leading to a long, clean finish with a distinct saline edge that speaks to its limestone origins.
Winemaker Fabio Marchionni follows a philosophy of minimal intervention to preserve the purity of the fruit. The grapes are harvested by hand, followed by a slow, low-temperature fermentation of the free-run must in stainless steel tanks. Crucially, Marchionni blocks malolactic fermentation to maintain the wine's signature snap and tension. The wine is aged for four months on its lees (sur lie) in stainless steel, which contributes to its textural depth while maintaining its crisp profile. This dedication to quality has led critics like Ian d'Agata to famously call ColleStefano "possibly Italy's greatest white wine buy." While major critic scores for the 2024 vintage are still rolling in, early reports and retailer tastings consistently rate it in the low-to-mid 90s, reinforcing its status as an exceptional value.
For food pairings, the wine's zesty acidity and herbal undertones make it a versatile companion for American coastal cuisine. It pairs beautifully with a Connecticut-style lobster roll, where the wine's sharp acidity cuts through the warm butter and sweet meat. Alternatively, try it with fried green tomatoes served with a remoulade sauce; the wine's vegetal notes of green pepper and fern echo the tomatoes, while the acid cleanses the palate of the fried batter. It would also be an excellent match for grilled mahi-mahi tacos topped with a lime-cilantro slaw, highlighting the wine's citrus drive.
