Description
Chateau Maris La Touge Organic 2020 is a standout example of biodynamic winemaking from the prestigious Minervois La Livinière Cru in the Languedoc region of France. For the 2020 vintage, this cuvée is reported as a blend of approximately 70% Syrah and 30% Grenache, shifting slightly from previous years to emphasize the spicy depth of Syrah. The vines are planted on ancient terraces featuring a complex soil composition of sandstone, clay, quartz, and limestone, which imparts significant minerality to the wine. The vintage itself was characterized by a wet spring followed by a warm, dry summer that avoided extreme heat spikes; cool nights in August allowed for a long ripening period, preserving freshness and acidity in the grapes.
In the glass, the wine exhibits a deep, opaque purple hue that suggests concentration and vitality. The nose is expressive and distinctly savory, opening with aromas of ripe blackberries, spiced cherries, and crushed mulberries, interwoven with classic Syrah notes of cracked black pepper, smoked bacon fat, and the herbal scent of wild garrigue. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, dry red that impresses with a lush, velvety texture and fine-grained, polished tannins. The flavor profile is rich with dark fruit, fig, and hints of graphite and violet, balanced by a vibrant acidity that leads to a persistent, savory finish.
Château Maris is renowned for its commitment to environmental stewardship under the guidance of winemaker Robert Eden. The estate is certified organic (Ecocert) and biodynamic (Biodyvin and Demeter), and it holds the distinction of being the first European winery to achieve B Corporation® certification. The winemaking approach is low-intervention, utilizing native yeasts for fermentation. To preserve the purity of the fruit and the expression of the terroir, the wine is aged primarily in concrete tanks and eggs rather than new oak, allowing the wine to breathe without masking its natural characteristics.
Critically acclaimed for its quality-to-price ratio, the 2020 La Touge received a 92-point score from James Suckling and 90 points from Wine Spectator, marking it as an affordable yet sophisticated gem. Its robust structure and savory depth make it a perfect companion for rich, protein-heavy dishes. Pair this wine with a slow-smoked beef brisket with a peppercorn rub to echo the wine's spicy notes, or a grilled ribeye steak topped with chimichurri. It also stands up beautifully to a bison burger with caramelized onions and sharp cheddar cheese.
