Description
Stolpman Vineyards L'Avion 2018
This distinctively rich white wine is a blend of 93% Roussanne and 7% Chardonnay, sourced exclusively from the Stolpman Estate in the Ballard Canyon AVA of Santa Barbara County. The fruit comes from two specific older blocks of Roussanne planted on a gentle slope that was once a runway for a local cattle rancher, inspiring the name "L'Avion." These vines are rooted in the region's signature limestone soils, which contribute a profound mineral backbone to the wine's opulence.
The 2018 vintage was a standout year for the region, characterized by a cool, steady growing season without the heat spikes that often challenge Santa Barbara viticulture. This allowed the Roussanne grapes to hang on the vine until late October, achieving an unprecedented level of flavor concentration while preserving vital acidity. The extended hang time, combined with the limestone terroir, produced a wine that balances immense power with structural elegance.
In the glass, the wine pours a deep, shimmering gold, hinting at its viscosity and richness. The nose is explosively aromatic, offering a complex bouquet of honeysuckle, ripe peach, orange blossom, and white tea, layered with secondary notes of toasted macadamia nut and warm vanilla. As it opens, hints of bruised apple and a stony minerality emerge, adding depth to the primary fruit profile.
On the palate, this is a full-bodied, dry white wine that delivers a "full-throttle" mouthfeel often described as a "red wine drinker's white." The texture is viscous and coating, saturating the mouth with flavors of apricot nectar, sea-salt caramel, and savory herbs. Despite its weight, the wine remains remarkably balanced, with a spine of fresh acidity cutting through the richness. The finish is exceptionally long, leaving lingering impressions of tropical fruit, baking spice, and a saline kick derived from the limestone soils.
Stolpman's farming and winemaking for L'Avion are meticulous and labor-intensive. The vineyard is farmed using organic and biodynamic practices, and the dedicated "La Cuadrilla" crew performs a unique task for this cuvée: about a month before harvest, they hand-rotate every grape cluster 180 degrees to ensure the fruit tans evenly in the sun, achieving the signature "russet" skin color of Roussanne. In the winery, the grapes undergo native fermentation in 100% new French Ermitage 500L puncheons, followed by aging in a mix of new and neutral large-format oak. This regimen integrates the oak seamlessly, adding volume without overpowering the fruit.
Given its weight and texture, L'Avion 2018 requires substantial food pairings. It pairs beautifully with lobster bisque or seared scallops, where the wine's richness matches the sweetness of the shellfish. Alternatively, try it with roasted pork loin with an apricot glaze or a butternut squash ravioli with sage brown butter, as the wine's savory and nutty undertones will complement the earthy, caramelized flavors of the dish.
Critics have lauded this vintage, with Antonio Galloni of Vinous praising the 2018 Stolpman releases as some of the most impressive he has tasted from the estate. Wine Enthusiast has also recognized the quality of this bottling, often awarding it scores in the low-to-mid 90s. While it commands a premium price for a domestic white, its age-worthiness and complexity offer a Northern Rhône-like experience that rivals wines at twice the cost.
