Description
Mas de Libian Côtes du Rhône Rouge “Bout d’Zan” 2023
This vibrant and soulful red serves as a benchmark for the Ardèche region of the Southern Rhône. It is a classic blend composed of 75% Grenache and 25% Syrah, sourced from vines averaging 40 years of age. The fruit is grown on the estate’s distinctive terroir in Saint-Marcel d’Ardèche, characterized by "galets roulés"—large, rounded river stones over red clay and limestone soils—which radiate heat at night to ensure perfect ripening. The 2023 vintage was defined by a challenging, rainy spring that demanded rigorous vineyard work to combat mildew, followed by a hot, dry summer that concentrated flavors and preserved acidity, resulting in a wine of exceptional balance and purity.
In the glass, the wine exhibits a brilliant, clear ruby hue with violet edges. The nose is instantly expressive, delivering a bouquet of ripe blackberries, wild blueberries, and dark plums, underpinned by the region’s signature "garrigue" aromas of crushed thyme and rosemary. True to its name—"Bout d’Zan" is a French childhood nickname referencing a licorice stick—there are distinct notes of black licorice, violet pastille, and a touch of white pepper. On the palate, this is a medium-bodied, dry wine that prioritizes drinkability and freshness. It features a silky texture with soft, dusty tannins and a core of juicy dark fruit that evolves into a savory finish marked by black olive tapenade and a streak of stony minerality.
The Thibon family has been farming this land since 1670 and are staunch advocates of certified biodynamic agriculture (Demeter). Their philosophy centers on biodiversity and minimal intervention; they even employ two horses, Nestor and Bambi, to plow the vineyards, avoiding soil compaction caused by tractors. In the cellar, the grapes are 100% destemmed and co-fermented using only native yeasts. To preserve the fruit's vibrancy and the terroir's expression, the wine is aged for approximately nine months in a combination of concrete vats and large oak foudres (30%), avoiding the use of small new oak barrels.
This wine’s savory herbal edge and bright acidity make it a versatile partner for American cuisine. It pairs beautifully with slow-smoked pulled pork shoulder, where the wine’s peppery spice complements the bark and its acidity cuts through the fat. Alternatively, serve it with grilled lamb burgers topped with feta and rosemary aioli; the "garrigue" notes in the wine will mirror the herbs in the dish perfectly. Recognized for its consistent quality and value, the 2023 vintage was awarded 92 points by James Suckling, who praised its vibrant energy and fruit-forward character.
