Description
Jump Mountain Borderland 2021
This commanding red blend is a distinctively Virginian composition featuring 62.5% Tannat, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 12.5% Cabernet Sauvignon. Sourced entirely from the estate's vineyard in Rockbridge Baths, the fruit is grown on south-facing slopes at elevations reaching 1,330 feet. This high-altitude site in the Shenandoah Valley AVA benefits from limestone-based soils and a unique mesoclimate created by the sandstone knob of Jump Mountain, which protects the vines while ensuring cool nights that preserve essential acidity.
The 2021 vintage in Virginia was characterized by a generally dry and favorable growing season, allowing late-ripening varieties like Tannat to achieve optimal phenolic maturity. The resulting wine pours a deep, opaque ruby with a viscous core that hints at its structural intensity. On the nose, it offers a powerful bouquet of macerated blackberries, dark plums, and black currants, layered with savory undertones of leather, dried tobacco, and a touch of graphite derived from the rocky terrain. As the wine opens, subtle notes of violet and cedar emerge, adding elegance to the rustic profile.
On the palate, the Borderland 2021 is full-bodied and dry, defined by the formidable structure of the Tannat grape. It presents a "hearty" and "rustic" character with a dense core of black fruit flavors supported by firm, gripping tannins and a spine of fresh acidity. The mid-palate reveals complex hints of dark chocolate, roasted espresso bean, and earth, leading into a long, savory finish that promises excellent longevity. This is a wine of substance that balances its European-style restraint with the bold fruit concentration of the Shenandoah Valley.
Winemaking at Jump Mountain is a hands-on, family affair led by owners Mary Hughes and David Vermillion, with consultation from renowned Virginia winemaker Matthieu Finot. Their philosophy emphasizes low-intervention practices that highlight the specific terroir of their Walkers Creek Valley site. The grapes are carefully farmed to maximize ripeness in the cool mountain air, and the wine is crafted to reflect a traditional, age-worthy style that benefits from decanting in its youth.
Given its robust tannin structure and high acidity, this wine requires rich, fatty foods to unlock its full potential. It pairs exceptionally well with a smoked beef brisket rubbed with black pepper and espresso, as the proteins soften the wine's grip. Alternatively, try it with a grilled ribeye steak topped with blue cheese butter, or a venison stew with root vegetables, which complements the wine's gamey, earthy nuances.
The 2021 Jump Mountain Borderland was awarded a Silver Medal at the 2025 Virginia Governor's Cup, solidifying its status as a high-quality example of Virginia's potential for bold red blends. It represents excellent value for a small-production, estate-grown wine of this caliber.
