Description
Dawn Chorus Sauvignon Blanc, Hawke’s Bay 2024
This wine is a pure expression of its origin, crafted from 100% Sauvignon Blanc grapes. It showcases the pristine varietal character for which New Zealand is world-renowned, focusing on fruit purity without the influence of blending partners.
The 2024 vintage in Hawke's Bay was a welcome return to form, characterized as a "winemaker's vintage" with conditions slightly warmer than the long-term average and moderate rainfall. Following the challenges of the previous year, the 2024 growing season allowed for exceptional fruit concentration and flavor development. The fruit is sourced from a unique vineyard site located approximately 20 miles from the coast, situated on an ancient salt lake and riverbed. These soils, composed of shallow river silts over greywacke stone, impart a distinctive saline quality and mineral backbone to the wine, while the region's cool climate preserves vital acidity.
In the glass, the wine presents a shimmering pale straw-yellow hue with brilliant clarity and a viscosity that hints at its crisp nature. The nose offers an explosive bouquet typical of the region, dominated by zesty grapefruit, juicy passionfruit, and aromatic fresh-cut grass. Underlying these primary notes are layers of lime zest, lemon verbena, and a subtle suggestion of ripe melon. On the palate, this is a dry, light-bodied wine that feels electric and vibrant. The flavor profile mirrors the aromatics with a refreshing surge of tropical and citrus fruits, anchored by a distinct minerality derived from the vineyard's ancient soils. The acidity is bright and racy, driving a clean, crisp finish that lingers with a satisfying savory nuance.
The winemaking philosophy at Dawn Chorus is defined by "minimal intervention, maximum intention." The estate practices organic farming, ensuring the health of the land and the purity of the fruit. Harvest takes place in the cool of the early morning to protect delicate aromatics and natural acidity. In the winery, the juice undergoes natural fermentation and is left to rest on its lees (spent yeast cells) for an extended period. This technique builds texture and complexity, adding a creamy mid-palate weight that balances the wine's natural zest before a single-pass filtration prior to bottling.
This zippy Sauvignon Blanc is exceptionally food-friendly. It pairs beautifully with a classic American Cobb salad, where the wine's high acidity cuts through the richness of the bacon, avocado, and blue cheese. Alternatively, try it with grilled shrimp skewers finished with a squeeze of fresh lime; the citrus notes in the wine will harmonize perfectly with the char and acid of the dish. For a simple appetizer, a goat cheese and arugula flatbread makes for a knockout combination, as the herbal notes in the wine complement the peppery greens and tangy cheese.
While major critical scores for the 2024 vintage are not yet released, the producer has a track record of consistency. The 2023 vintage was awarded a respectable 90 points by James Suckling, suggesting that this bottle offers excellent quality relative to its price point. It represents a high-value entry in the category of expressive, terroir-driven New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc.
