Description
Sadie Family Wines Rotsbank '24
This wine is a singular expression of 100% Chenin Blanc, hailing from a unique and rugged site in the Swartland region of South Africa. Sourced specifically from the Aprilskloof area of the Paardeberg mountain, the vines are rooted in incredibly shallow, decomposed granite and quartz soils situated on a rock shelf. This extreme geology naturally limits vine vigor and yields, forcing the dry-farmed plants to struggle, which in turn produces fruit of spectacular concentration and transparency.
The 2024 vintage was defined by a challenging growing season marked by prolonged drought and a compressed harvest window. However, the vintage was saved by a fortuitous reduction in the region's typically strong winds, which significantly lowered water stress on the vines. This allowed the grapes to ripen earlier and more consistently than expected, preserving the fantastic freshness and natural acidity that characterize this specific release. The result is a wine that captures the resilience of the vines and the vibrancy of a season that defied the odds.
In the glass, the Rotsbank '24 presents a beautiful, clear pale gold color. The nose is initially shy and benefits from aeration, slowly revealing complex, reductive aromas of gunflint, seaweed, and crushed oyster shells. As it opens, these savory notes give way to brighter, fruit-driven layers of grapefruit, green tea, and tropical granadilla. On the palate, this is a dry, medium-bodied wine with an incredibly linear and firm structure. It offers a precise focus with flavors of tart citrus and apricot, balanced by a touch of stone fruit richness. The texture is remarkable, featuring fine, drying tannins and a zesty acidity that drives a long, mineral-laden finish.
Winemaker Eben Sadie is a master of minimalist intervention, and his approach here is designed to let the vineyard speak clearly. The farming is meticulous, utilizing organic and sustainable practices. In the cellar, the grapes are hand-harvested and whole-bunch pressed. Fermentation takes place spontaneously with native yeasts in old oak foudres, and the wine is aged on its lees for 12 months to build texture and complexity before being bottled with minimal sulfur.
The wine’s high tension and saline minerality make it a versatile partner for American coastal cuisine. It pairs beautifully with seared scallops in a lemon-butter sauce, where the wine's sharp acidity cuts through the richness of the butter. It would also be a fantastic match for a classic Maine lobster roll, as the citrus notes in the wine complement the sweet, delicate lobster meat. For a lighter option, try it with grilled fish tacos topped with fresh mango salsa to highlight the wine's tropical nuances.
While specific scores for the 2024 vintage are still forthcoming, the Rotsbank cuvée has established a track record of excellence. Previous vintages like the 2022 and 2023 received outstanding acclaim, including 97 points from both The Wine Advocate and Tim Atkin MW. These accolades solidify its status as one of South Africa's most exciting white wines. Given the quality evident in the bottle, it remains a fantastic value in its class for collectors seeking world-class Chenin Blanc.
