Description
Meadowcroft, “Oakville” Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
This wine is a singular expression of its origin, composed of 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. Sourced from the prestigious Oakville AVA, a region often considered the tenderloin of Napa Valley, this bottling exemplifies the power and elegance synonymous with the terroir. The 2022 vintage was a dynamic growing season characterized by climatic extremes; welcome winter rains helped alleviate drought stress, followed by a warm summer and a significant heat spike in early September. This "sprint to harvest" necessitated precise picking decisions to preserve acidity while achieving optimal phenolic ripeness, resulting in wines with profound color intensity and robust structural integrity.
In the glass, the wine reveals a deep ruby red hue with a vibrant purple core, suggesting excellent concentration. The nose presents an enticing and complex bouquet of ripe blackberry and black cherry, interwoven with sophisticated secondary notes of vanilla, cigar box, and a delicate wisp of smoke. On the palate, this is a dry, full-bodied Cabernet that unleashes a torrent of dark fruit flavors, particularly blackberry compote and mineral undertones. The texture is defined by smooth, velvety tannins and well-balanced acidity, culminating in a long finish reminiscent of a fresh-baked fruit tart dusted with baking spice.
Winemaker Tom Meadowcroft approaches this wine with a philosophy rooted in sustainable farming and minimal intervention, allowing the vineyard's character to shine through. With a limited production of only 103 cases, this is a truly handcrafted labor of love. The winemaking process likely involves careful barrel aging to integrate the tannins and impart the subtle spice notes detected on the nose, balancing the fruit's natural intensity with structural elegance.
This Cabernet Sauvignon is built for classic American cuisine. It pairs beautifully with a grilled ribeye steak, where the wine's bold tannins and acidity cut through the rich marbling and char of the meat. Alternatively, slow-braised short ribs make for an excellent match, as the tender meat mirrors the wine's velvety texture. For a vegetarian option, a hearty wild mushroom risotto offers earthy flavors that complement the wine's mineral and spice notes. While professional scores for the 2022 vintage are currently being finalized, previous releases from this vineyard have consistently scored in the low 90s, offering a compelling taste of premium Oakville terroir at a relative value compared to its neighbors.
