Description
Vina Otano, Rioja Reserva Red 2017
This distinguished Rioja Reserva presents a classic and authoritative blend composed of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, and 5% Mazuelo. Sourced from the prestigious Rioja Alta sub-region, specifically around the town of Fuenmayor, the fruit comes from vines ranging between 30 and 95 years of age. These old vines dig deep into calcareous clay and limestone soils, imparting significant mineral depth and structural integrity to the final wine. The inclusion of Graciano adds essential acidity and aromatic lift, while the Mazuelo contributes deep color and tannic backbone, supporting the rich fruit profile of the Tempranillo.
The 2017 vintage in Rioja was defined by dramatic weather events, most notably a severe April frost followed by a hot, dry summer. Known as a "frost vintage," yields were historically low, but the surviving grapes achieved remarkable concentration and health. Rated "Very Good" by the regulatory council, this year produced wines with slightly higher alcohol and immense flavor density. The challenging conditions necessitated rigorous selection in the vineyard, resulting in a wine that balances the natural ripeness of the warm season with the elegant structure typical of Rioja Alta.
In the glass, the wine displays a deep, brilliant ruby core transitioning to a garnet rim, indicative of its barrel aging and maturity. The nose is highly expressive and complex, offering a constellation of aromas including black raspberry, cassis, and macerated dark cherries. These primary fruit notes are intricately woven with secondary and tertiary layers of cigar wrapper, dried sage, brown spices, and a distinct touch of cedar and meatiness derived from the oak. It is an evocative bouquet that suggests both power and sophistication.
On the palate, this is a dry, medium-to-full-bodied red that delivers a seamless integration of fruit and earth. The texture is silky yet substantial, with polished, fine-grained tannins that provide a firm undercarriage without being aggressive. Flavors of blackberry compote and plum skin mingle with savory notes of clove, mocha, and fresh-tilled earth. A vein of bright, saline-tinged acidity keeps the wine lifted and energetic, preventing any heaviness. The finish is persistent and poised, leaving lingering impressions of vanilla, toasted oak, and wild herbs.
Familia Otaño, a third-generation winemaking family established in 1886, practices sustainable viticulture, utilizing mechanical weeding to avoid the use of chemical herbicides. Following a manual harvest, the grapes undergo a long maceration to extract maximum color and phenolic structure. This Reserva was aged for approximately 18 months in a combination of French and American oak barrels, followed by significant bottle aging in the cellar before release. This extended élevage allows the oak tannins to polymerize and soften, resulting in the velvety mouthfeel characteristic of high-quality traditional Rioja.
The wine's savory depth and acidity make it a versatile companion for rich dishes. For an American-leaning pairing, serve this with slow-smoked beef brisket; the wine's notes of cigar smoke and spice will harmonize beautifully with the bark and fat of the meat. Alternatively, a grilled ribeye steak with a rosemary-garlic compound butter would highlight the wine's herbal undertones and structure. For a lighter option that still stands up to the wine, try a roasted chicken with wild mushrooms and thyme.
