Description
Domaine Jean Pierre Large, Morgon, “Les Délys” 2023
This wine is a pure, expressive example of 100% Gamay, sourced exclusively from the historic “Les Délys” lieu-dit in Morgon. The vineyard is a true family treasure; the Large family has resided in this hamlet for over two centuries, and many of the vines used for this cuvée were planted by Jean-Pierre’s grandfather, making them over 100 years old. These centenarian vines naturally limit yields, resulting in small, concentrated berries that offer profound depth and complexity rarely found in younger plantings.
The 2023 vintage in Beaujolais was characterized by a warm, sunny growing season that delivered exceptional ripeness while maintaining vital freshness. The “Les Délys” vineyard features south-southeast facing slopes with deep soils composed of decomposed granite, schist, and iron-rich porphyre. This specific terroir allows the vines to root deeply (3 to 6 feet), imparting a distinctive mineral backbone and "earthy" breadth to the wine that distinguishes it from lighter Beaujolais crus.
In the glass, the wine presents a lovely medium-dark reddish-purple hue with violet highlights. The nose is aromatic and inviting, bursting with notes of ripe black cherry, wild blackberry, and macerated strawberries, underpinned by savory nuances of wet clay, leather, and a touch of graphite. On the palate, this is a medium-bodied, dry wine that balances fleshy fruit weight with structural elegance. Flavors of kirsch and plum paste mingle with crushed stone minerals and a hint of white pepper. The texture is velvety yet energetic, supported by fine-grained, well-integrated tannins and a bright acidity that leads to a smooth, lingering finish.
Jean-Pierre Large describes himself as a traditionalist, employing classic semi-carbonic maceration to preserve the Gamay grape's inherent fruitiness. Depending on the vintage conditions, he partially destems the grapes (typically 25-50%) before a 12-day maceration period. To maintain purity and freshness, the wine is aged for six months exclusively in stainless steel tanks, avoiding the influence of oak to let the granite terroir shine through clearly.
This Morgon is incredibly versatile at the table. It pairs beautifully with a classic roast chicken or holiday turkey, where the wine's acidity cuts through the rich skin. For a more American-leaning option, try it with grilled pork chops glazed with a tart cherry sauce; the fruit profiles will mirror each other perfectly. It is also an effortless companion for a charcuterie board featuring cured sausages and creamy cheeses like Reblochon.
While specific scores for the 2023 vintage are still being released, the consistently high quality of this estate is well-documented, with the 2022 vintage receiving 92 points from James Suckling. Given the pedigree of the old vines and the prime terroir, this wine represents an outstanding value in the world of Cru Beaujolais, offering the structure of a Burgundy at a fraction of the price.
