Description
Churchill’s 10 Years Old Tawny Port
This distinguished non-vintage Port represents a sophisticated balance between the vibrancy of youth and the complexity of age, showcasing the producer's signature "dry" house style. The wine is composed of a traditional field blend of premium Douro varieties, specifically Touriga Nacional, Touriga Franca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Barroca, and Tinto Cão. Sourced from Grade-A vineyards in the prestigious Cima Corgo and Douro Superior subregions, the vines struggle in nutrient-poor schist soils on steep terraces. The region's intense climate—marked by scorching, dry summers and cold winters—ensures low yields and small berries with concentrated sugars and aromatics, providing a robust structural backbone for long-term aging.
In the glass, the wine reveals a clear, bright brick-red hue with flashes of amber at the rim, indicating its decade of oxidative aging. The nose is expressive and complex, offering a tapestry of dried apricots, Smyrna figs, and orange peel, layered with savory notes of toasted almonds, cedar, and a whisper of salted caramel. On the palate, this is a full-bodied and sweet wine, yet it retains a remarkable acidity that prevents any cloying sensation, a hallmark of the Churchill’s philosophy. Flavors of red berry jam, walnuts, and baking spice evolve into a long, velvety finish that is clean and persistently fresh.
Churchill’s distinguishes itself through meticulous sustainable farming and traditional winemaking practices; notably, the fruit is foot-trodden in ancient granite lagares using indigenous yeasts for fermentation—a labor-intensive method typically reserved for Vintage Ports. Following fortification with grape spirit to arrest fermentation, the wine matures for an average of ten years in seasoned oak casks (pipes), allowing for controlled oxidation that softens the tannins and develops tertiary nutty characteristics. The wine is filtered and ready to drink immediately, requiring no decanting.
For food pairings, this Tawny shines with American classics. It pairs exceptionally well with a traditional Southern pecan pie, where the wine's caramel and nut notes mirror the dessert's profile while the acidity cuts through the richness. Alternatively, try it with slow-roasted pork tenderloin glazed with dried cherries, as the savory fruit character of the Port complements the meat's sweetness. It also serves as a brilliant companion to a cheese board featuring sharp Wisconsin cheddar or a creamy blue cheese.
Critically acclaimed, this bottling has received 94 points from Decanter and 91 points from Wine Spectator. Esteemed critic Robert Parker has praised it as "unquestionably the finest Tawny I've tasted in years," creating a compelling argument for its value relative to its high quality in the 10-year category.
