Description
Tablas Creek Patelin de Tablas Rouge '22
This wine represents a masterclass in the "neighborhood" blending concept, sourcing fruit from nine top-tier Rhone-style vineyards across the Paso Robles AVA to complement Tablas Creek's own estate standards. The 2022 vintage is a meticulously crafted blend of 54% Syrah, 29% Grenache, 13% Mourvèdre, 3% Counoise, and 1% Terret Noir. While Syrah provides the dark, savory backbone, Grenache adds vibrant red fruit and acidity, Mourvèdre contributes earth and structure, and the Counoise and Terret Noir offer spice and complexity.
The 2022 growing season in Paso Robles was defined by a fourth consecutive year of drought and a dramatic heat dome event around Labor Day. This "winemaker's vintage" produced significantly lower yields and smaller berries, resulting in a wine of intense concentration and deep color. Despite the heat, the vineyards—many located in the calcareous clay soils of the Adelaida and Templeton Gap districts—retained remarkable freshness, balancing the solar power of the region with a distinct mineral elegance.
In the glass, the wine pours a brilliant, deep ruby-purple. The nose is highly expressive and savory, opening with aromas of black raspberry, crushed rock, and licorice, followed by complex notes of soy, saddle leather, and dried lavender. On the palate, this is a medium-bodied, dry wine that feels simultaneously rich and energetic. Flavors of brambly blackberry and plum are accented by a Syrah-driven note of smoked pancetta and wild herbs (chaparral). The texture is polished yet structured, featuring chalky, fine-grained tannins and a bright streak of acidity that lengthens the finish.
Tablas Creek employs a traditional, minimalist approach to winemaking to ensure the terroir shines through. The grapes were destemmed and fermented using only native yeasts in a combination of upright oak fermenters and stainless steel tanks. To preserve the fruit's vibrancy and avoid masking the site-specific mineral notes, the wine was aged for six months in large, 1,500-gallon neutral oak foudres. While Tablas Creek itself is the world's first Regenerative Organic Certified® winery, the fruit for this bottling is sourced from neighbors who share a commitment to sustainable and conscientious farming practices.
This wine's savory profile and elevated acidity make it a versatile partner for American cuisine. It pairs beautifully with grilled lamb burgers topped with feta and rosemary aioli, as the wine's herbal "garrigue" notes echo the seasoning of the meat. Alternatively, try it with a slow-smoked beef brisket; the wine’s peppery Syrah grip and fresh acidity will cut through the richness of the fat while complementing the smoky char.
The 2022 Patelin de Tablas Rouge has received widespread critical acclaim, underscoring its status as one of the best values in California Rhône-style blends. It was awarded 93 points by Wine Spectator, which praised its "elegant structure" and "satiny texture," and received 92 points from both Wine Enthusiast and Decanter. It remains a benchmark for affordable luxury in the Paso Robles region.
