Description
Brotte Les Hauts de Barville Chateauneuf du Pape 2020
This classic Southern Rhône red is a masterful blend composed of 80% Grenache, 15% Syrah, and 5% Mourvèdre. The 2020 vintage was characterized by a warm, dry growing season that allowed for optimal ripening while preserving freshness, resulting in a wine of exceptional balance. Sourced primarily from the "Les Hauts de Barville" lieu-dit on the western side of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation, the vines thrive in a diverse terroir. The soils here are a mix of rich clay and silt, which contribute to the wine's renowned smoothness, and the region's iconic alpine diluvium and "galets roulés" (large quartzite stones) that absorb heat during the day to aid in maturation at night.
In the glass, the wine displays a deep, brilliant ruby hue with youthful purple glints. The nose is expansive and complex, offering a symphony of ripe red fruits such as wild strawberry, mulberry, and black cherry, interwoven with notes of sweet spices, truffle, and the savory dried herbs of the garrigue. On the palate, this is a full-bodied, dry wine that feels rich and plush, often described as having a creamy texture. The fruit flavors are vibrant and concentrated, supported by finely-edged, elegant tannins and a brisk acidity that provides structure without harshness, leading to a long, spicy finish.
Maison Brotte, a family-owned estate spanning four generations, is dedicated to sustainable viticulture, holding Terra Vitis and HVE Level 3 certifications to protect biodiversity. For this cuvée, the grapes are hand-harvested, destemmed, and gently crushed before undergoing a long maceration of three to four weeks. To achieve the perfect harmony between fruit purity and structural depth, the winemaking team employs a split aging process: the Syrah is matured in French oak barrels to enhance complexity, while the Grenache is aged in concrete vats and 100-year-old oak foudres (large casks) to preserve its fresh, fruity character.
This wine's robust structure and savory depth make it an ideal companion for rich American cuisine. It pairs beautifully with a grilled ribeye steak served with a peppercorn sauce, where the wine's tannins cut through the marbling and the spice notes echo the pepper. Alternatively, try it with slow-braised beef short ribs; the wine's plush texture and herbal undertones will complement the savory, melt-in-your-mouth meat perfectly.
Critics have heaped praise on this vintage, solidifying its status as a top-value contender in the region. It received a remarkable 93 points from Jeb Dunnuck and 92 points from Wine Spectator, Wine Advocate, and Vinous. For a wine of such pedigree and complexity from one of France's most prestigious appellations, it offers outstanding quality and relative affordability compared to its peers.
