Description
Tablas Creek, Esprit de Tablas Blanc, Paso Robles 2021
As the flagship white blend from this pioneering estate, the 2021 Esprit de Tablas Blanc represents the pinnacle of American Rhône-style winemaking. This vintage is composed of a specific blend of 70% Roussanne, 17% Picpoul Blanc, 10% Grenache Blanc, 2% Bourboulenc, and 1% Clairette Blanche. The dominance of Roussanne provides the wine's structural backbone and richness, while the higher-than-usual percentage of Picpoul Blanc injects a vibrant, tropical brightness that distinguishes this year's release.
The 2021 growing season in the Adelaida District of Paso Robles was characterized by a cold, dry winter that resulted in smaller berries and concentrated flavors. Following the drought-induced low yields, the growing season was remarkably even, with heat spikes followed by cooling periods that preserved exceptional natural acidity. Grown on the estate’s limestone-rich calcareous shale soils, the fruit benefits from the winery's rigorous farming standards; Tablas Creek is the world's first Regenerative Organic Certified® winery, alongside holding organic and biodynamic certifications. This holistic approach to terroir ensures a wine that vividly translates the minerality and vitality of the vineyard into the glass.
In terms of appearance, the wine pours a brilliant, medium gold color with flashes of green at the rim. The nose is immediately arresting and complex, offering primary aromas of poached pear, crystallized pineapple, and baked apple, layered with secondary notes of honeysuckle, white pepper, and coriander seed. Beneath the fruit lies a subtle hint of brioche and sweet spice. On the palate, this is a distinctively medium-bodied, dry white wine that balances a luscious, honeyed texture with electrifying acidity. Flavors of nectarine, beeswax, and graham cracker unfold on the tongue, anchored by a savory, saline minerality. The finish is profound and lengthy, lingering with notes of young peach, citrus pith, and a touch of textural bitterness that adds sophistication.
Winemaking for the Esprit Blanc is designed to enhance texture while preserving freshness. The fruit was whole-cluster pressed and fermented using native yeasts. To build mouthfeel and complexity, the Roussanne component was fermented in a variety of oak vessels, including 60-gallon barrels, 170-gallon demi-muids, and large foudres, with approximately 10% being new French oak. The Grenache Blanc, Picpoul, and other varietals were fermented in stainless steel and neutral oak to maintain their aromatic purity. Notably, all lots went through malolactic fermentation, contributing to the wine's creaminess without sacrificing its focused spine of acidity.
This wine's combination of richness and zip makes it a versatile companion for American cuisine. It pairs exceptionally well with a Connecticut-style lobster roll, where the wine's weight stands up to the butter and sweet meat while the acid cuts through the richness. Alternatively, try it with a roast pork loin glazed with apricots and thyme; the stone fruit notes in the wine will mirror the glaze, and the savory herbal undertones will complement the meat. For a vegetarian option, a butternut squash ravioli with sage brown butter would be a sublime match.
Critics have lauded the 2021 vintage as a "blockbuster," with the wine securing 95 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate and 96 points from Owen Bargreen. Vinous also awarded it 94 points, calling it "texturally thrilling." Given its pedigree, aging potential of two decades, and the sheer complexity it offers, it remains a remarkable value relative to top-tier white Châteauneuf-du-Pape bottlings.
