Description
Guillemot-Michel Quintaine Viré-Clessé 2023
This exceptional white Burgundy is crafted entirely from 100% Chardonnay, sourced from old vines averaging 60 years of age in the historic hamlet of Quintaine. The 2023 vintage in the Mâconnais was generous in both quality and quantity, characterized by a stormy but ultimately smooth growing season that yielded optimally ripe berries with brilliant natural acidity. The unique terroir of the Viré-Clessé appellation features Jurassic limestone soils heavily decarbonated into silt, which, combined with east-facing slopes, imparts a distinctive structure and freshness to the wine. In the glass, the wine displays a pale yellow hue with brilliant golden reflections and a moderate viscosity, leading to an expressive nose of crisp green apple, ripe pear, lemon peel, white flowers, and a subtle, leesy nuttiness. On the palate, this medium-bodied, dry wine offers a silky, unctuous texture counterbalanced by a vibrant, saline acidity, delivering flavors of citrus zest, crisp melon, and a hint of honeycomb that culminate in a long, mineral-driven finish. The Guillemot family are pioneers of biodynamic farming, employing a minimal-intervention philosophy where hand-harvested grapes undergo spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts and are aged on fine lees exclusively in concrete tanks, completely avoiding oak. This unoaked Chardonnay pairs beautifully with American-leaning dishes like herb-roasted chicken with root vegetables, pan-seared scallops in a lemon-herb butter sauce, or a creamy wild mushroom risotto, as the wine's earthy minerality and bright acidity perfectly balance rich, savory flavors. While major critic scores for the 2023 vintage are still emerging from publications like Vinous, early community reviews consistently rate it in the low 90s, highlighting it as a tremendous value and a relatively affordable benchmark for world-class white Burgundy.
