Description
Chateau du Coing de St. Fiacre Muscadet de Sevre et Maine Sur Lie 2021
This classic Loire Valley white is crafted from 100% Melon de Bourgogne grapes. The fruit is sourced exclusively from the estate's vineyards in Saint-Fiacre, a unique terroir situated at the confluence of the Sèvre and Maine rivers. The vines here, many of which are over 60 years old, are planted on south-facing slopes characterized by metamorphic Gneiss and Schist soils. These specific soil types are renowned for imparting a distinct floral elegance and aromatic finesse to the wine, differentiating it from the heavier Granite-based Muscadets found elsewhere in the region.
The 2021 vintage was a challenging one for the Loire, marked by severe April frosts and a cool, rainy growing season. While yields were significantly reduced, the resulting wines are a return to the "classic" Muscadet style: lower in alcohol, vibrant, and driven by racy acidity. The cool maturation period preserved the grape's natural tartness and emphasized the mineral backbone of the terroir, creating a wine of precision rather than power.
In the glass, the wine presents a pale lemon-gold hue with brilliant clarity and a faint, playful effervescence (pétillance) typical of the style. The nose opens with crisp aromas of Granny Smith apple, lime zest, and white peach, underpinned by a distinctive saline note reminiscent of crushed oyster shells and sea spray. As it opens, subtle hints of white flowers and fresh yeast emerge. On the palate, this wine is light-to-medium bodied and bone dry. It delivers a surge of electric acidity that carries flavors of tart citrus and green pear. The texture is notably creamy and rounded in the mid-palate—a direct result of the lees aging—which provides a perfect counterpoint to the sharp mineral finish that lingers with notes of wet stone and iodine.
Winemaker Véronique Günther-Chéreau and her daughter Aurore practice sustainable farming (HVE Level 3) and began the official conversion to organic viticulture with this 2021 vintage. In the cellar, they adhere to traditional Nantais methods. The wine is fermented in underground, glass-lined concrete vats to maintain thermal inertia. Crucially, it is aged "Sur Lie" (on the fine lees) for several months (typically 6 to 9) without racking. This extended contact with the spent yeast cells enriches the wine's texture and protects its freshness, eliminating the need for excessive sulfur.
While Muscadet is the quintessential partner for raw oysters, this bottle pairs exceptionally well with American coastal classics. Try it with a Connecticut-style lobster roll; the wine's piercing acidity cuts through the warm butter while the leesy texture complements the sweet lobster meat. It is also a brilliant match for New England clam chowder, where the saline minerality mirrors the clams and the acid cleanses the palate of the rich cream base. For a Southern twist, pair it with fried catfish, as the crispness acts as a perfect foil to the cornmeal batter.
While specific scores for the 2021 vintage are scarce, Château du Coing is a benchmark producer in the region, with previous vintages frequently earning "Editors' Choice" distinctions and 90+ scores from Wine Enthusiast. It remains one of the greatest value white wines in the world, offering complex terroir expression at a remarkably accessible price point.
