Description
Lubanzi CANS Shiraz – 2023
This vibrant red wine is a pure expression of 100% Shiraz, sourced from the rugged and biologically diverse Swartland region of South Africa. The 2023 vintage was characterized by warm and dry conditions, effectively acting as a "spa day" for the vines. These climatic patterns led to concentrated, ripe fruit development and necessitated an earlier harvest in late February to preserve natural acidity. The unique terroir of the Swartland, often defined by its ancient soils and bush vines, contributes to the wine's distinctive savory edge and depth.
In the glass, the wine pours a vibrant ruby color with a youthful purple edge, defying expectations for canned wine. The nose presents a complex aromatic profile of ripe black plum and blackberry jam, layered with distinct varietal notes of cracked black pepper, a whisper of smoky earthiness, and dried herbs. On the palate, this is a dry, medium-bodied red that feels incredibly juicy and smooth. Flavors of dark cherry and boysenberry mingle with savory undertones, supported by soft, well-integrated tannins and bright, refreshing acidity. The finish is moderately long, leaving a pleasant, lingering memory of dark fruit and spice.
Lubanzi is renowned for its ethical approach, crafting this wine from sustainably and organically farmed vineyards. As a Fair for Life certified producer, their philosophy emphasizes social responsibility alongside quality. The winemaking follows a minimal interventionist approach, utilizing natural fermentation in stainless steel tanks. This method avoids oak influence to let the pure fruit characteristics shine, resulting in a genuinely vegan-friendly sip that prioritizes freshness and varietal integrity.
For food pairings, this Shiraz is a versatile partner for American comfort cuisine. It pairs beautifully with BBQ pulled pork sliders, where the wine's inherent fruitiness and peppery spice complement the smoky-sweet sauce. It would also be fantastic with a hearty lentil stew, as the wine's earthy notes echo the dish's savory depth. Esteemed critic James Suckling rated this vintage an impressive 89 points, noting its fragrant, peppery character, which highlights its exceptional value and quality within the canned wine category.
