Description
Pierinvaletta, Barolo (2020)
This expressive Barolo is a pure expression of 100% Nebbiolo, sourced from Azienda Agricola Rivetti Massimo's organically certified estate vineyards. While the producer is historically based in Neive, the fruit for this specific bottling is harvested from a specialized 1-hectare plot in La Morra, a commune renowned for yielding the most perfumed and graceful expressions of the appellation. The vines boast an average age of 40 years, with some venerable plants reaching 70 years, deeply rooted in the region's calcareous clay and marl soils which contribute significant minerality and structural finesse to the final wine.
The 2020 growing season in Piedmont was characterized by a warm, consistent summer without excessive heat spikes, followed by a mild autumn that allowed for perfect phenolic ripeness. This vintage is widely celebrated for its approachability and aromatic clarity, producing wines that prioritize elegance over sheer power. In the glass, the wine presents a classic translucent garnet hue, showing early signs of evolution with subtle brick-orange highlights at the rim. The nose is immediately captivating and lifted, offering archetypal Nebbiolo aromatics of dried rose petals, sour Morello cherry, and wild strawberry, woven together with complex secondary notes of star anise, licorice root, and a savory hint of dusty earth or tar.
On the palate, this Barolo is dry and medium-bodied, distinguishing itself with a supple texture that reflects the charm of the vintage. A vibrant core of red fruit flavors—redcurrant and raspberry—is framed by energetic, bright acidity that provides lift and freshness. The tannin structure is polished and fine-grained, offering the necessary grip for aging without the aggressive astringency often found in younger Barolos. The finish is persistent and graceful, leaving lingering impressions of dried herbs, tobacco leaf, and a distinct stony minerality.
Azienda Agricola Rivetti Massimo adheres to a philosophy of minimal intervention and sustainability. The vineyards are farmed organically without the use of synthetic herbicides or pesticides, relying instead on manual mowing and natural biodiversity. In the cellar, fermentation is spontaneous using only native yeasts to ensure an authentic expression of terroir. The wine undergoes aging for 24 months in large Slavonian oak foudres—a traditional vessel that oxygenates the wine gently without imparting overwhelming vanilla or wood toast flavors—and is bottled without filtration to preserve its textural integrity.
This wine's refined structure and acidity make it a versatile companion for rich, savory American cuisine. It pairs exceptionally well with slow-braised beef short ribs served over creamy parmesan polenta, where the wine's acidity cuts through the marbling while its tannins bind with the protein. Alternatively, try it with a wild mushroom and truffle risotto; the wine's earthy undertones and notes of forest floor will mirror the umami depth of the dish perfectly.
While major critic scores for the 2020 vintage are not yet widely published, previous vintages of Rivetti Massimo's Nebbiolo-based wines have received acclaim, including scores in the low 90s from outlets like Vinous. This bottling represents excellent value in the Barolo category, offering a high-quality, artisanal introduction to the "King of Wines" that is ready to drink now with a decant but will continue to evolve beautifully over the next decade.
