Description
Vignoble Vade Saumur Champigny Rouge “Trezellieres” '23
This vibrant Loire Valley red is a pure expression of 100% Cabernet Franc, sourced from the specific “Les Trézellières” lieu-dit where vines average 30 years of age. The fruit is cultivated on the region's famed clay-limestone soils, which are heavily influenced by the underlying tuffeau chalk. This porous bedrock acts as a sponge for water and a thermal regulator, essential for achieving ripeness in the cool Loire climate.
The 2023 vintage in Saumur-Champigny was characterized by a return to freshness and elegance, producing wines with energetic fruit profiles and moderate alcohol. In the glass, the wine displays a brilliant, deep ruby hue with violet highlights. The nose is immediately expressive, offering a bouquet of crushed raspberries, ripe cassis, and crunchy red cherries. These primary fruit notes are complexed by the varietal’s signature savory undertones—think pencil shavings, graphite, and a whisper of green bell pepper—alongside a floral lift of crushed violets. On the palate, this is a distinctively medium-bodied and dry wine. It showcases a core of juicy redcurrant and bramble fruit, supported by fine-grained, silky tannins and a streak of stony minerality. The acidity is bright and refreshing, driving a finish that lingers with notes of fresh herbs and forest floor.
Vignoble Vadé is committed to organic farming practices, holding certification that reflects their dedication to biodiversity and soil health. In the cellar, Pierre-Adrien Vadé favors a low-intervention approach to preserve the terroir's voice. The grapes are hand-harvested and fermented with native yeasts. Crucially, the “Trezellieres” cuvée is aged entirely in stainless steel tanks for approximately eight months. This decision to forego oak aging allows the purity of the fruit and the chalky minerality of the tuffeau soil to shine through without the masking influence of wood spices.
The wine’s high acidity and savory herbal edge make it a versatile partner for American cuisine. It pairs exceptionally well with a classic bacon cheeseburger; the wine's acidity cuts through the rich fat of the patty and cheese, while its fruitiness complements the savory bacon. Alternatively, try it with North Carolina-style pulled pork, where the vinegar-based sauce resonates with the wine’s natural tang and the red fruit notes balance the smoke. For a vegetarian option, a grilled portobello mushroom burger with roasted red peppers offers an earthy, savory match that highlights the wine’s graphite and mineral characteristics.
Professional scores for the 2023 vintage are not yet widely published by major international critics. However, Vignoble Vadé has established a reputation for producing high-value, terroir-driven wines that consistently outperform their price point, making this an excellent "insider" choice for lovers of authentic Cabernet Franc.
