Description
Stolpman Vineyards Hilltops Syrah Ballard Canyon ‘18
This benchmark bottling is composed of 100% Syrah, sourced exclusively from the limestone-rich "Limestone Crown" of the estate's center hilltop in the Ballard Canyon AVA. Unlike the producer's larger blends, this wine is a specific selection from high-density vineyard blocks planted at 2,400 vines per acre. The competition between these tightly spaced vines forces the roots deep into the limestone bedrock, resulting in low yields of intensely concentrated, thick-skinned fruit that defines the "Hilltops" character.
The 2018 vintage is widely regarded as a "dream year" for Santa Barbara County, characterized by a moderate, steady growing season free of the dramatic heat spikes that often define the region. Following an early July warm spell, the weather cooled significantly, allowing for an extended hang time that preserved vital acidity while developing complex phenolics. The terroir of Ballard Canyon is critical here; the vines are exposed to relentless winds from the Pacific Ocean, which create a diurnal temperature shift of nearly 40 degrees. This "refrigerator effect" ensures the wine retains a vibrant freshness despite the intense sun exposure of the ridgeline.
In the glass, the wine presents a deep, opaque ruby-violet hue that clings to the sides of the vessel. The nose is highly expressive and savory, offering a complex bouquet of crushed blackberries, black plums, and black raspberries, interwoven with distinct notes of cracked black pepper, cured meat, and dried lavender. On the palate, this medium-to-full-bodied wine is dry, delivering a dense core of dark fruit supported by a framework of fine-grained, ripe tannins. Layers of anise, graphite, and wild herbs unfold on the mid-palate, leading to a long, polished finish marked by a signature chalky minerality derived from the limestone soils.
Stolpman Vineyards is a pioneer of dry farming in California, a practice that eliminates irrigation to force vines to struggle for moisture, thereby increasing flavor concentration. For the 2018 Hilltops, the winemaking team utilized approximately 50% whole clusters during native yeast fermentation in open-top concrete tanks, a technique that enhances the wine's spicy aromatics and structural backbone. The wine was then aged for 18 months in 500-liter French oak puncheons, with 70% neutral and 30% once-used wood, ensuring the oak supported rather than overshadowed the fruit.
This Syrah is a quintessential match for smoky, grilled American cuisine. It pairs exceptionally well with a Santa Maria-style tri-tip steak seasoned with garlic, salt, and pepper, as the wine's savory depth mirrors the char of the meat. Alternatively, try it with a grilled lamb burger topped with melted gruyère and caramelized onions; the wine's acidity and tannins will cut through the richness of the cheese and the fat of the lamb, creating a harmonious balance.
Critics have heaped praise on this vintage, with Jeb Dunnuck awarding it a stellar 94 points and noting its "vibrant, cool-climate style," while Vinous scored it 93 points and Robert Parker's Wine Advocate gave it 92 points. Given its pedigree, single-block sourcing, and critical acclaim, it represents remarkable value in the world of premium California Syrah, offering the complexity of a Northern Rhône wine at a fraction of the price.
