Description
Schloss Gobelsburg “Cistercien” Rosé – 2024
This distinctively Austrian rosé is a thoughtfully crafted cuvée of Zweigelt, St. Laurent, and Pinot Noir, sourced from the cool-climate vineyards of the Kamptal region. The 2024 vintage was defined by an extended ripening season, a climatic gift that allowed the grapes to develop complex aromatics while retaining the region's signature high acidity. The fruit is grown on a geological mosaic of loess, gravel, and calcareous soils, a terroir that imparts a structural elegance and savory depth often missing in warmer-climate rosés.
In the glass, the wine presents a very light, pale pink hue with pristine clarity. The nose is expressive and lifted, revealing primary aromas of wild berries, tart strawberry, and red currant, underpinned by subtle hints of white blossoms and crushed rock. On the palate, it is light-bodied and decisively dry, offering a vibrant texture and racy tension. Flavor notes of zesty lemon, blood orange, and fresh pomegranate are woven together by a core of stony minerality, leading to a finish that is long, clean, and invigorating.
Schloss Gobelsburg, a monastic estate with a history dating back to 1171, employs a philosophy of minimalist intervention to highlight the character of the Danube River region. Under the guidance of Michael Moosbrugger, the estate practices Sustainable Austria certified farming. Winemaking for the “Cistercien” Rosé involves gentle pressing and fermentation exclusively in stainless steel tanks. This technique creates a wine that is vinified more like a white than a red, ensuring the delicate fruit aromatics and crisp structure remain the focal point, unencumbered by oak or heavy extraction.
This wine’s high acidity and mineral backbone make it a superb partner for American cuisine. It pairs exceptionally well with a classic BLT sandwich, where the wine's crispness cuts through the richness of the bacon and mayonnaise. Alternatively, serve it alongside grilled cedar-plank salmon or a fresh Cobb salad with vinaigrette to complement the fresh vegetable elements. Critics have praised this vintage's precision; Vinous awarded the wine 90 points, noting its deeply mineral, terroir-driven profile. Given its pedigree and score, it offers remarkable value in its category.
